Believing, Therefore Speaking
We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak. 2 Cor. 4:13
Paul and the other Apostles suffered much because of the gospel they preached. But, having the same spirit of faith as David, he takes the words of David and applies them to themselves. “We also believe and therefore speak.” The person (especially a preacher) who has the faith of God’s elect wrought by the Holy Spirit, believes Christ and His doctrine, and therefore speaks. To do otherwise casts serious doubt on whether he has the “same spirit of faith” or “believes Christ’s gospel” To speak what we do not believe is hypocrisy; to believe and not to speak is cowardly; but to speak contrary to “it is written”, is deceitful and deadly. “Yea, woe is unto me if I preach not the gospel.”
