If you have ever had to confess that you have been ashamed of Christ or the Gospel, this message and the next one in this series is for you. You are not alone. You, with all other Christians, face a powerful enemy who desires to cover you with a suffocating veil of shame.Many people prefer a pastor who loves to hang out with the boys. The more he resembles them, the more they like him. The less a pastor resembles them, the less they like him.
In fact, the pastor who is genuinely radically different is a pastor who lives under the pressure of the world to be ashamed. This is also true of ordinary Christians. The more pure your life is because of Christian convictions, the more you will be pressurised to crumble under the weight of shame.
This sermon examines some of the ways in which Christians are tempted to become ashamed of Christ and the Christian life. It considers the forceful nature of shame. This theme begins in this message and ends in part 2 with Bunyan's ideas on how a Christian can escape from under the smothering drapes of shame.
