Condemning Sin in the Flesh
Suppose we knew a person, someone we grew up with, someone we thought to be our friend, and someone we came to rely on and trust in his judgments. He was a reasonable man and seemed to be fair and equal in his dealings with others. But one day he was exposed for what he really was; a murderer, a cheat, a liar, and a fraud. What if he was someone who all the while you trusted him had been using you for his own purpose and goals? Would you still seek his advice? Would or could you still rely on his judgments? Would you still cultivate his friendship and be concerned with his needs? This is exactly what takes place in the experience of grace. The old man of sin is revealed for what he is: “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh (Romans 8:3)”
