In Bethabera, beyond Jordan, a group of men were sent to enquire of John as to who he was. Instituting a new ordinance and preaching a strange doctrine, the great Sanhedrin demanded an explanation. After exhausting their speculations they finally asked this question: What sayest thou of thyself? John answered them without hesitation, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord.” It occurred to me as I read the account in John 1, that both parties were sent. The committee was sent of the Pharisees in Jerusalem; John was a man sent from God. The Levites and priests stood with all the reputation, influence, and prestige of organized, established religion. John stood alone in the power and purpose of God. He had only this to offer those who questioned his ministry; “I am the voice of one!”
