Exodus 3:11And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
What an interesting and instructive answer to Moses’ question.God is sending Moses on a mighty errand, a monumental task.Moses’ question implies a realization of his own insufficiency.Who am I?Who am I?In answering that question, God didn’t say anything about Moses. He didn’t encourage Moses by bragging on him. Here is who you are Moses:“I will be with thee.”You are the one that I am with. That’s all anyone needs to know about you.Pharaoh doesn’t need to know anything else about you, your qualifications are irrelevant, leave your resume at home.He needs to know that I have sent you, with my message.
It is the same with God’s gospel preachers.Paul spoke for them all when he spoke in language like that of Moses:“who is sufficient for these things (2Cor 2:16)?”Who am I, that I should deliver the message of God almighty?Who am I that I should be involved in that which is a matter of eternal life and death? The answer is the same.“I will be with thee.”That’s the man you need to listen to.
I get sick to my stomach of hearing people tell me how smart their preacher is and how well qualified. He has college degrees and has written several books. One man told me once that his preacher was so intelligent that he could hardly understand what he said.He said that like it was a good thing.Of what use is a man with a message, if you cannot understand the message?
I just need to know one thing about your preacher.Did God send him?Is God with him?Let me hear his message, and I’ll tell you whether God is with him or not.Isaiah 8:20To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Do they speak according to the word of God, or do they tell people what they want to hear?Do they say, “God loves you; God loves everybody,” or do they speak according to the word and warn sinners that God’s love is in Christ, and only in Christ?Noah could have told those in the ark, “God loves you,” but those drowning on the outside would have had a hard time buying that. And they would have been right not to.God’s love is in Christ.Romans 8:39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.To promise all sinners that God loves them is blatantly dishonest, and unscriptural: Romans 9:13As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.Psalms 5:5The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.“All workers of iniquity” applies to all who are not holy in, by through and because of the Lord Jesus Christ.
You can tell if a man is sent by God, by whether or not he says what God said, does he have the message God gave?God told Moses to tell Pharaoh, “Let my people go.”What do you suppose Moses said to Pharaoh? You guessed it.It is the same today. We have a specific message.Paul described it this way: “We preach Christ and Him crucified (1Cor 1:23).”His Person and work. This is our message.Paul said this of those who are saying anything else: But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:8)
