Has Today’s Church Lost Its Way?

There are those who say the ‘church’ today has lost its way - that it is no longer relevant and that it has nothing to say to 21st century society. Is this true? Well, it certainly is not true of Christ’s church – for we know that Christ Himself has said of His church that He is the builder of it, He continues to build it, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). He does, and is doing, just as He pleases, just as He purposed, and just as He wills in His church - for the saving of His elect and the glorification of His Name.

But it is true that the professing Christian ‘church’ of our day has indeed lost its way. Why? Because it has turned its back on the preaching of the gospel of Christ, supplanting it with novelties and entertainment, and as such, has turned its back on Christ, who is Himself, the Way, the Truth and the Life. Any ‘church’ that turns its back on Him who is the Way has indeed lost its way, and is of no use, and of no good in reaching lost sinners with the gospel of their salvation. The church has no reason for its existence apart from Christ and His gospel. Without Him, it has no message, no reason, no purpose, no hope, no light, and, as Christ says, it is become as salt which has lost its savor (see Matthew 5:13-16).
