Ransom
In scripture the price paid for freedom is called the ransom.

God's people sinned. Death had a lawful hold on them. Christ Jesus came to give his life a ransom to free them from death. He paid by dying in their place. His life was the ransom. Since he paid the ransom they are free. They can never die. The Lord Jesus said that he came to give his life a ransom for many (Matthew 20: 28.)

Redeem
In scripture the word redeem is very similar to the word ransom. For example, I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death (Hosea 13:14.)

In scripture, when a person owed money they would sell their things. Sometimes the person sold himself. He would become another person's servant. God made a way for the person to be freed. First, the proper price had to be paid. This was called the redemption price. After the redemption price was paid, the person or things were freed or redeemed. In scripture the one who paid the redemption price was called the redeemer. When the person could not pay then their nearest of kin became their redeemer.

The children of God lost everything when they sinned. They could not redeem themselves so their nearest of kin, God's Son, paid all their debt for them. Christ is the Kinsmen-Redeemer.

Turn Not Again to Idolatry
Acts 15: 24: Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

Those who did not believe that Christ perfected his people, and is able to make his people obedient in spirit and in truth, used the law of Moses to trouble (to pressure) the Gentile brethren into an outward form of compliance using the law of Moses.

They "subverted" or turned them in a wrong direction--put them into reverse--made them to go backwards rather than forwards. Christ was their peace with God in their souls, but the legalists would have them back up and look to outward requirements; Christ was their complete acceptance with God but by pressuring them into an outward form of godliness the legalists pressured the saints to go in reverse; Christ was their rejoicing but by placing the emphasis on outward obedience the legalists pressured them backwards to take notice of their service to God rather than worshipping in Spirit, rejoicing in Christ and having no confidence in the flesh.

It was the same as pressuring them back again to the bondage of their former idolatry. That was Paul's exact argument to the Gentiles in Galatia. Believer, be sure you get this.

Gentiles were never under any part of the Mosaic Law given by God from Mt. Sinai. They were aliens to the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise (Eph 2: 11, 12.) Yet while in idolatry, the Gentiles imagined that acceptance with their gods was based, in some measure, on their service to them. After Christ called them out of darkness into his Light, some began pressuring them back to the belief that acceptance with God was based, in some measure, on the services performed by the believer according to the law of Moses. Paul warned them that they were turning again to the same worthless elements, desiring again their former bondage. Take time to slowly read it for yourself: Galatians 4: 8: Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. 9: But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? 10: Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. 11: I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

Listen believer, if you are being troubled that some part of your Christian obedience will further perfect or purify you, will gain you a reward in the church or with God, is the way by which holiness is measured, or if the law is used to motivate (pressure) you into an outward mold of obedience then hear the apostle Paul as he calls it the doctrine of idolatry. Christ will profit you nothing.

Truth is, Christ Jesus perfected his people at Calvary. Our King also purifies the hearts of his saints through faith which he gives. And just as real as the Lord effectually commanded Peter to leave all and follow him while he walked this earth, right now from heavens glory, he continually, effectually turns, leads, and teaches his people in the new heart through the Holy Spirit. The yoke is not man's, it belongs to Christ the Son of God. His yoke constrains us by his love for us, not by fear. His yoke is the light and easy yoke of grace, not the heavy burden of law. His yoke is the power Christ effectually works in his saints through his word. The right to exercise this power in each believer is the right that belongs to King Jesus alone by his finished work of redemption. Christ, himself, is what makes the gospel the power of God unto salvation. Many think this is foolishness, they stumble at it, or they require some outward confirmation that this is so. But to those who have been called by his power, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. This is the Power that Paul warned would be denied by many, though they have a form of godliness.
