Glorified Dogs

“He bowed himself (Mephibosheth), and said, What is thy servant, that thou (David) shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?” 2 Samuel 9:8

As Mephibosheth compared himself to a worthless dead dog in the presence of King David for the great kindness shown to him, so is the consideration of every child of sovereign grace. As we sit at the King’s table day after day reflecting upon and delighting in the bounty of God’s perpetual blessings in Christ we can only bow and worship.

Though but dogs by nature, as Mephibosheth’s feet were under the table, our despicable shame and inabilities are under the table, out of sight, out of God’s sight by His tender mercies. He has raised us up in Christ and sat us together with Christ in heavenly places. Though we often see ourselves, and feel our infirmities, in our native condition, God never does. He always smiles upon His own as we feast with Him.

What a position for a dog! Accepted! Glorified! “Moreover whom He did predestinate, them He also called: and whom He called, them He also justified: and whom He justified, them He also glorified” Romans 8:30. As David’s thoughts of love fell upon Jonathan and consequently upon Mephibosheth he manifested the same according to the desire of his heart. So it is with God’s love for Christ and His sheep - “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” 1John 4:9.

The love of God is the heart and soul of the sinner’s salvation from election to glorification. There is nothing mechanical or systematic involved in God‘s salvation. May God save us from legalizing and systemizing the glories of God’s amazing, wondrous, love-saturated grace!
