Isaiah 8: 18: Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
This is more than a statement of fact. It is a command witnessed in the hearts of God's saints from the LORD of host which dwelleth in heavens mount. The Spirit of Christ turns us from our body of death saying, "My dear child, behold Me for signs and wonders of assurance. And as you behold Me seated at God's right hand, behold, you and all the children whom the LORD hath given Me seated here with Me in mount Zion."
1. The word "sign" means covenant. Our risen King and Savior is the Covenant given by God the Father (Isa 7: 14; 9: 6; 42: 6.) The law--the everlasting covenant--is written on the heart when Christ is formed in you for he is the Order and Surety, the Yes and the Amen, given for a covenant. He is our Rainbow of assurance: Isaiah 54:9: For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee.
2. The word "wonder" has to do with his person and his work; with him being the express image of God; the extraordinary exhibition whereby God declares himself. God has spoken to us by his Son. (Heb 1: 1-4; Col 1: 18, 19.) His name is Wonderful (Is 9: 6, 7.) His person is Wonderful; God and Man; our High Priest, our Savior, the LORD of hosts, bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh. Can you think of anything more wonderful? His love for his people is wonderful. His doctrine, his life, his death, his resurrection, his reign are all for wonders for you. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee (Isaiah 12:6.)
3. He is the sign and wonder to the believer even when we behold those who reject him (Luke 2:34; Isa 8: 14.)This sign and wonderful manifestation of God's glory is not at all what the natural man perceives to be glorious. For many, the thought of a virgin conceiving a baby called that "holy thing" "of the Holy Ghost" is too far fetched? The thought that the infant who lay in a donkey trough in Bethlehem was truly the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father is irreconcilable with man's image of the Messiah. When reading that this Jesus was tempted in all points like his brethren, that he suffered the feeling of our infirmities, that he believed God, prayed to the Father, was strengthened by the Father, it makes him to be so much a Man like those he is not ashamed to call brethren that this is the very basis of rejection for many (Heb 2: 10-18; 3: 1.) Multitudes behold him on a criminal's cross appearing as if men had power over him and thus they stumble in disbelief that this could be the wisdom by which God forever perfected his people? For most, when they behold his body placed in a tomb it is too wondrous to believe that his body is no longer there but is risen and glorified in heaven. The truth that he honored his law as the Representative of his people, paid the wages of sin as their Substitute, rose from the grave, and presents us faultless before God is a stumbling block to the legalist and foolishness to the foolish. I Timothy 3: 16: And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
4. Behold his power and grace in the wonderful miracle that we, who were once dead in trespasses and in sins, who hated God with all we are, now entrust our eternal well-being into his hands and we believe him. What signs and wonders of his greatness working in us Israelites from the LORD of hosts. He is the Covenant, the Word, the Promise, our Perfection, the Fullness which filleth all in all.
Do you seek assurance that you are his? If you can heed the command he gives then shall you have it freely. Look away from these bodies of death to where he is risen and seated. He says, Behold I and the children whom the LORD hath given me...for signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion (Is 8: 18; Col 3: 1-4.)
