Is God Sovereign? You Know He Is!

What do we mean when we say God is sovereign? Simply this, God is God. He reigns upon His throne, He exercises His will, He brings His purposes to pass and He governs all things. My friend, the truth of divine sovereignty is not complicated. Yes, it is offensive to the natural man, but it is not complicated. Either God reigns, or He is reigned over; either God rules, or somebody rules God. Either God governs, or He is governed. Either God has His will or man has his will. Is God sovereign? This is not a difficult question to answer if we bow to the authority of Scripture. "Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did He in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places" (Psalm 135:6). The Lord said, "My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure... I have purposed it, I will also do it " (Isaiah 46:11-12). Job acknowledged divine sovereignty when his ten children died. "The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD" (Job 1:21). When Samuel told Eli that the Lord was going to kill his evil sons, Eli bowed to the sovereign authority of the Lord and said, "It is the LORD, let Him do what seemeth Him good" (1 Samuel 3:18). Paul declared the sovereignty of God in salvation and wrote, "Therefore hath He mercy on whom He will have mercy, and whom He will He hardeneth" (Romans 9:18). Nebuchadnezzar said of the Lord, "He doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth" (Daniel 5:35).
