Jesus Brings Sharp Division
In agreement with what Peter says in 2 Peter 2:10-12, people who teach wrong ideas on spiritual warfare, are often loud and assertive (bold and arrogant--Peter's words). He also adds ignorance in verse 12. They make their presence known and steamroll all opposition. They prey on godly Christians who have a more gentle disposition (and rightly so), taking every opportunity to pump out their errors. They are intolerant of believers who hold to the faith as taught by Jesus and the apostles. They are sensationalists and have no time for anything ordinary and fundamental.Talk of "binding the devil" and "chasing the devil" and "sending the devil back to hell where he came from" are all evidence of people who don't have the kind of respect God insists on when believers deal with this spiritual war.
Jesus said that He came to bring division on earth, not peace (Luke 12:49-53). It is clear where the division comes in. Believers who stand firmly for the plain teachings of Scripture can be united with one another as they engage with one another in life and the life of the church. Those, such as the advocates of wrong spiritual warfare we are considering, who refuse to submit to the plain, basic teachings of Scripture are enforcing this division by their resistance. People who believe this fantastic theory about direct warfare with spiritual forces often accuse believers who don't of being divisive. Paul saw this issue clearly when he wrote Romans 16:17: it is false teaching that brings division, not the truth of the gospel. It is the plain teaching of the gospel of peace that highlights the division caused by those who will not comply.
