Now notice, the order and obedience which the Holy Spirit worked in these ministers and in the brethren at Antioch.

1. They fasted and prayed--these ministers and brethren at Antioch set themselves apart and took time to pray to the Lord concerning this. This was a time when the Spirit had laid it upon their hearts that two of the pillars in their church would be leaving to go to the Gentiles; this was a time, like all others, when they especially cast all their care upon their Savior in prayer, both for God's will in directing them in this matter, for the Lord to continue providing for the church at Antioch, and for God's grace upon these two faithful men.

2. And when they had fasted and prayed, they laid hands on them...this has more significance than just a ceremony...this was a faithful, prayerful, submissive, acknowledging of the work of the Holy Spirit that these were indeed the men to be sent.

3. So they sent them away...they did as the Lord bid them in the heart and trusted these men to God to use and strengthen by the sufficiency of his grace. By that same all-sufficient grace they fulfilled the work God gave them to do. Every work God has foreordained, he makes known to his saints, and always provides the grace to accomplish it. Acts 14:26: And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.
