John 4:34 "Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work."

Christ Jesus never argued in defense of his will. He never argued in defense of the will of man. His only concern was the will of God.

During his ministry on earth He taught His disciples to pray, " Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth." Time and time again his testimony went like this, "I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me." Even before he went to the cross He prayed, "O Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt."

Do I want to argue against God for my will to be done? Do I want to proclaim that my will is free when even Christ Jesus the Lord did not glorify his own will? How does man glorify Holy God by wielding the sword in defense of men with whom there is no hope save by the grace of that same Holy God?

The concern of Christ Jesus was not his own will, but to finish the work that God gave him to do in eternity. In the beginning of Christ's ministry on earth, when he was but twelve years old, as he sat among the doctors in the temple hearing and asking questions, the Lord asked Joseph and Mary, "Wist ye not that I must be about my Fathers business?" Our Lord even went so far as to tell us what is the will and work of God, "And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day." Thus in the end of his ministry as He hung on the cross bearing the wrath of God on behalf of all those the Father gave him in eternity, he cried out, "It is finished."

Christ Jesus is the only one who has ever perfectly obeyed the will of God, and obeying perfectly the will of God is the only way his will is obeyed. He did it for sinners who have no ability whatsoever to please the God of heaven and earth who settles for nothing less than holiness. Let us be thankful that such matters of obtaining perfect righteousness and justification were not left to us. Let us rejoice that the Lord Jesus came to do AND DID the will of God. Believe on him.
