The believer is compared to a runner in a race. A runner lays aside everything that will hinder him in the race. So it is with believers. Noah laid aside any concern over what folks said about him. Abraham laid aside his land and his father's house. Moses laid aside fame and fortune because he trusted the Lord instead of riches. Many of the saints literally laid down their own bodies.

The sin which doth so easily beset us may be some particular sin, but the reality is, it is unbelief. We lay it aside only as through faith we cast all our care on Christ, who careth for us (I Peter 5: 7.) All the past sins, all the past dishonesty in religion and out, before conversion and since, must be laid aside. God says to the believer, "I remember it no more, where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin." (Hebrews 10: 17, 18.) He placed the sin of his people on Christ, Christ bore the demands of justice in our place, our sins are purged, therefore we must not bring them up again.

The main point here is this: lay aside everything--whatever sacrifices are necessary--whatever it costs you and follow Christ.
