Do You Know the Difference?
Luke 16: 15: And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
There is no word as practical as the gospel of Christ. Yet the only way a sinner will practice continuing in Christ alone by faith is if God works it in you, to do his will and his good pleasure. The difference between God-wrought works and vain religious acts is a spiritual discernment given by God which differentiates between what the natural heart highly esteems and that which God hates.
For a carnally religious man, sermon-after-sermon which is set on the glorious person of Christ Jesus will slowly but surely eat away at him because Christ is declared to be All before the eyes of men--instead of him. The carnal heart's desire is to seek life in God's word to justify himself before men, instead of looking to Christ our Righteousness of whom this word speaks.
The Lord often said, "He that hath ears to hear, let him hear." The Way of salvation looked eye-to-eye with those who were too busy commanding others to heed God's command and the Lord said to them, Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
Can you discern the difference between the works of the Pharisees and the good works of the believer? The good works of the believer is to let nothing turn you to your flesh away from Christ. Natural man hates this work, but loves his works; God loves this work, but hates natural religion's works. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man (I Corinthians 2:14, 15.)
Believer's come to God's place of worship to be fed with the Bread from heaven, the sincere Milk of the Word, the Water out of the Rock, the wine of Christ's precious blood. The more you eat this meat the more you will be able to exercise your senses to discern good and evil. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Hebrews 5:14.)
May the Lord be pleased to make you heed this book of the law and take great comfort in his precious promises. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it (I Thessalonians 5: 21-24.)
