Luke 16: 15: And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
Like the law and the prophets, God's word in the epistles all have their end in turning believers from calling our sin righteousness--FROM JUSTIFYING OURSELVES BEFORE MEN--to staying immovably set on true Righteousness, Christ the Lord alone.
Yet, like the Pharisees in this text, many who claim to have professed Christ have simply turned from Moses law and abused the word of the epistles with the same legalistic bondage. Sadly, this goes for many five-point Calvinist as well as Armenians. Satan does not look at denominational lines. In every age Satan has used the oppressive yoke upon sinners, to bind sinners to look to their flesh, instead of to Christ alone. SATAN DOES NOT WANT YOU TO TRUST CHRIST ALONE!
Pharisees may not say that they preach obedience for righteousness but just to make the believer a little more holy or for a better reward in heaven. IF CHRIST IS NOT ALL OUR SANCTIFICATION AND OUR PORTION IN GLORY, THEN WE HAVE NO REASON TO CONCERN OURSELVES WITH HEAVEN MUCH LESS A REWARD IN HEAVEN.
Let me try to set forth how a man goes to the epistles like he goes to the law. A man will read in Peter's first epistle, 5: 5: "Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble."So the religious man will clothe himself in what he thinks humility looks like in the sight of men. Every story he tells you will have its main objective in you seeing what a lowly, humbled, sinner he is. He will read, "God resisteh the proud" and though he may rule in his workplace or in his home like a villainous tyrant, when he graces the doorway of the church, in the sight of men, he cowers down like a little whipped pup. Because ever since he gave intellectual assent to the doctrine of Christ, ever since he switched from the First Free Will Church to the Church of Free Grace the apostle Peter's words have become his new law-for-righteousness just like Moses law used to be. He switched from one camp but never left the other; he left off one title and took the Lord's name in vain; he moved from one systematic theology to another JUST LIKE THE JUDIAZERS WHO ENTERED INTO THE CHURCH AT GALATIA--CALLING ON CHRIST AND TRUSTING IN THE FLESH. Yet, nothing happened from God in the heart.
What the carnal man will not do, neither indeed can do, apart from God giving a new nature, is to Humble himself under the mighty hand of God, casting all our care upon him. Not only can he not do it, but he has no idea what it is.
These Pharisees could not understand that true humility, as well as all other fruit of righteousness which is BY JESUS CHRIST is fruit of the heart. It comes forth as naturally as a pear on a pear tree. But whatever the believer is involved in, this work is a desire for all eyes to be on Christ, not on our sinful flesh.
