Young Mr. Kim needs your help

Here is one of the latest entries into the tragic record of North Korea's inhospitable land. The translation has not been perfected, but you will grasp the meaning with no trouble. And I hope then that you will pray from the heart for this fellow believer.

Young Mr. Kim was running a business with some friends in China. One day some concerned people approached him about a plan they had to take a large group of NK refugees out of China. They were looking for someone who could help the refugees escape in the field. Kim was the only person brave enough to volunteer to get involved for no financial profit.

The escape began. Kim had gotten many of the refugees to a port in China, but for some reason, information got leaked to the Chinese police. The refugees and Kim were raided at the port. Two-thirds of the refugees got caught and sent back to North Korea . Only a handful made it safely to their destination. Kim and his cameraman were arrested for organizing an "illegal border transgression" and were sent to a Chinese prison. The cameraman spent one year there, and Kim, nearly four.

The day of his release was widely known to all involved in Kim's life, but not to Kim. He was informed of the release the morning that it happened.

The plan was that he would arrive home in the late afternoon. After nearly 3 hours of waiting, a local Congressman involved in the case was asked to assist. It turns out that that he had been handcuffed as soon as he came off the plane and interrogated by the agents.

The reason: Kim had, unbeknown to him, been indicted by his two business friends for fraud though he didn't even know what had happened with his business after he went to jail.

As for the ‘fraud': When Kim was caught helping NK refugees escape, his business with his 2 friends went bankrupt and incurred some thousand dollars as a result. On top of that, he made some credit cards and lent them to NK refugees in great need before his imprisonment and he has been on the Credit Black list since then. But the general consensus is that his four horrific years in a Chinese jail is more than enough for Kim to have paid.

Some pastors and NKHR activists took him to a couple of hospitals and discovered these tragic developments:

  • Lost 30 kg in those 4 years.
  • Insomnia: Kim sees everything as prison. His house is a raised ranch house that is always dark unless the lights are on. Kim feels that his house is like the Chinese prison. As a result, he hasn't been able to sleep at night and doesn't want to stay at home and wants to go out all the time.
  • Persecution mania: He shouts that there is a bomb or bug installed somewhere at home by the Chinese police.
  • Loquacity. He is constantly talking. His family does not know what to do. Once he said that someone from China was calling him. He picked up the phone and spoke on the phone by himself.
  • Schizophrenia: He can change in his attitudes toward people. For example, his daughter took him out. They were on the subway but suddenly he got off and the train door closed. His daughter kept calling him but he wouldn't pick up the phone. So, the daughter called a man who is involved with Kim's case and told him that she lost him. He called him and Kim answered, saying that he would meet only with him but no one else. So, the man met with him and took him home.
  • Violence: Kim sees his wife and two daughters as aggressive and violent Chinese female jailors and has used violence on them. His wife has received bruises on her arms and has been choked. His daughters have been beaten also.

We have no doubt that the reason Kim was released on parole is that the Chinese Authority saw his physical condition was getting worse and didn't want to take the responsibility for it.

According to Kim, when he was being captured by the Chinese Police, they tortured him severely and he also suffered from mob violence caused by Chinese and Korean inmates, as well as by the jailors.

Even though he was the head of his family, he willingly volunteered to get involved with helping NK refugees escape, expecting no reward. As a result of his nearly four- year imprisonment, however, his family has been suffering at great cost. His wife has had to do whatever job comes her way to sustain her daughters and mother-in-law. She has recently been working part time at a sewing factory but since it's not on a regular basis, she has been having difficulties educating her children and sustaining her family. To hospitalize Kim is a very expensive matter. Kim's first daughter is a sophomore in high school and is determined to work as soon as she graduates to support the family.

Every night, Kim shows these strange symptoms. The family is in great agony. Before the circumstance with the family gets worse, Kim's medical treatment and the financial plan for the family need to be settled.

Your prayer and support for him are greatly needed. Kim put aside his business and family to help NK refugees. We, as brothers and sisters of Kim are now called to ease his burden. Your support for him would make his sacrifice and love for North Koreans more fruitful.
