BLOG ON: SERMON Importance of Baptism
Sovereign Grace Baptist Church, NJ
Clay Curtis
Romans 6:3: Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4: Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5: For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7: For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8: Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10: For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11: Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Baptism is the believer's public confession of faith in Christ and a public vow of consecration to Christ. When you, as a new believer are baptized, by being immersed in water then raised out of that water you symbolize what literally took place for you when Christ your Substitute died, was buried and rose again. You are publicly confessing that when Christ was made sin it was your sin that he bore in his own body. When justice demanded the wages of sin from him, you are confessing that it was your death that he died in your place. You are confessing that when he died you really died. As you go into that watery grave you confess that the grave in which your Savior was buried was really your grave. When you come up out of that watery grave you confess that when he rose from the dead you were raised in him.

Furthermore, you confess publicly that by the same power which raised him from the dead, you have been raised to newness of life. Just as Christ shall never die again so you shall never die. The sting of death is sin and the Lord Jesus Christ put away all you sin. Sin's strength is the law and Christ satisfied the law as your Representative. You confess that just as Christ lives unto God, so you now live unto God. Just as Christ is holy and righteous, you confess to the world that in him you have been made the very righteousness of God. By faith in Christ Jesus your Lord, you count yourself dead indeed to sin, but alive unto God. You are no longer led by the flesh but by the Holy Spirit; no longer under the law but under grace. Sin no longer has dominion over you, but now Christ Jesus the Lord rules in your heart. His people are your people; his will is your will; his ways are your ways. You confess that you are in a new kingdom, higher than this earthly realm, and you now are as perfectly accepted of God as Christ Jesus the Lord. (Galatians 3:27; 2 Cor 5: 17.)
