Exodus 14: 10: And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. 11: And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? 12: Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. 13: And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. 14: The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Unbeliefresults in great fear--v10:...the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid. Faith says, v13: "Fear ye not."
Unbelief casts blame. The attitude with which Israel cried out to the LORD is revealed by what they cried out unto the LORD's servant--v10:...the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. 11: And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Faith says, V13: "Fear ye not, stand still."
Unbelief would rather serve Satan, sin and all unrighteousness for that appears better to the unbeliever than to bear the reproach of Christ--V12: Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. Faith believes the LORD, saying, v13: "Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will show you today; for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever."
Unbelief faces trial and is loud, obnoxious, and rambling. First, this way then that way always seeking a way out by the strength of the flesh, like a sea full of waves that can not be calmed. Faith casts all care upon the Lord in quiet confidence saying, v14: The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Yet, as we behold the unbelief of the Israelites and the faith of Moses it is easy to see the warfare that constantly rages between the believer's flesh and our God-wrought inner spirit. There is a part of us that cries out as did the Israelites and there is the inner working of grace which casts all our care on our Lord.
How good it is to the believer to know that our Lord promises us that sin shall not have dominion over us for we are under his gracious Lordship. It is the Lord who speaks in our heart saying, "Fear not, stand still; see my salvation which I will show you today. I will fight for you and you shall hold your peace." How wonderful that our Lord never speaks in "mights or maybes" but always in "wills and shalls."
