BLOG ON: SERMON Memory Impacts Relationships 1
GraceUnlimited
Alan Lester
To conclude this response, the letter I received in response to my sermon Your Memory Affects Your Relationship With God expresses worry over the issue that part of my message was based on psychology and the findings of studies dealing with "trends" concerning memory.

Allow me to assure the listener, that having majored on studies in Nouthetic counselling for over 5 years, nothing is more distasteful than a suggestion that I have based part of my sermon on psychology. I fiercely oppose psychological theory as it attempts to explain God's world. I have most certainly not based any part of my sermon on "psychology", even though I have included "trends" that have been observed over the years by people in different disciplines. Please read my previous blog together with this one.

Some may not be aware that there are over 250 different schools of psychology. They all presuppose theories that conflict with the presuppositions of Christians who love God's Word. I have included none of these godless theories into my sermon.

Regarding the "trends", it is quite permissible for the preacher of the word to establish a biblical truth and to use illustrations, analogies, literature, statistics and even observable trends in his preaching in order to make the message of Scripture more understandable to the modern hearer. Jay Adams wrote a book called, "Truth Applied", which strongly advocates this approach. Paul even did this in Acts 17:28. The distinction is that while I have quoted trends researchers have noted while trying to understand memory, I have in no way given those trends an authoritative platform, nor have I explained them by means of any phychological theory. I have taught a Scriptural principle and have merely shown how this Scriptural principle applies to my hearers, focusing especially on the way human deceitfulness impacts the memory.

I have called this series of blogs "Friendly Fire! Friendly Fire!" because I know that I stand on the same team with the brother who wrote me the letter. We stand for the same truths. We support the absolute sufficiency of God's word. We both hate godless psychological theory. I suggest that that hatred for godless psychological theory may be driving one of us to find it in places where it doesn't exist.
