BLOG ON: SERMON Memory Impacts Relationships 1
GraceUnlimited
Alan Lester
A recent letter exposed two issues in a sermon I recently posted here on Sermonaudio (How Your Memory Affects Your Relationship With God).

Firstly, the question was raised as to whether there truly is a biblical basis for this proposition. The letter contended that in the texts I quoted, Psalm 36:2 and Jeremiah 17:9, hermeneutical principles do not allow for such an interpretation. I would like to graciously respond in this manner.

I agree that the word "memory" is not inserted in either of those texts. I also agree that what the texts are speaking about are the deceitfulness of the fallen human heart (as attested to by Genesis 6:5, quoted in the letter). I take the fall of man seriously, as does the Bible. The fall brought about a radical negative change to every faculty man graciously possesses. Certainly the deceitfulness of man is an issue in every area of his thinking. I would question whether there are any biblical grounds to isolate the memory from the negative effects of the fall. In speaking about how the memory affects a person's relationship with God, I have spoken specifically of the way in which that deceitfulness is related to the way in which people sinfully manipulate their memories in order to better serve themselves. This manipulation goes so far as to convince people that they actually remember their past in a way different to the way in which it actually happened. This is a pointed application of the Bible's teaching on the deceitfulness of the heart as it relates specifically to the way in which he manipulates his memories. This is certainly well within the boundaries of hermeneutics.

The other issue was something I would like to discuss in a separate blog because of its importance and personal nature.
