Hebrews 11: 27: By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Many have given up the world to follow Christ, many have given up the pleasures of sin to follow Christ, many have given up riches to follow Christ. But now we come to something that very, very few ever give up. In order to understand what this verse means when it says Moses did not fear the wrath of the king, we have to look back to Exodus to see what the king did which tested Moses faith in Christ.

The Lord's word to Pharaoh through the mouth of Moses was: Let My people go, that they may hold a feast unto Me in the wilderness" (Ex 5:1.)

When Moses told Pharaoh (the most powerful king in the entire world), the king offered a reasonable compromise to Moses: Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land (Ex 8:25). Pharaoh is saying, "If your God is the ever-present God then you can worship God anywhere. You don't have to worship in the place he has appointed, you don't have to assemble with his people, or be so narrow in your worship. Moses, save your self the trouble of going into the wilderness, I will allow you to sacrifice to your God right here in Egypt."

Exodus 8: 26, 27: And Moses said, It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God: lo, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us? We will go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the Lord our God as He shall command us." Moses and the believers came to God with a different sacrifice than the Egyptians came before their god. Thus Moses says they will kill us because our sacrifice is an abomination to them. So it is with those who trust Christ alone. Christ is not the sacrifice of those who come to God with Christ plus some work of sanctification they have performed. The believer and those who mix works and grace are opposed to one another. Therefore Moses says we will go where God has appointed and worship God in the Sacrifice that he has commanded.

Then, as all men do when they are attempting to sway you to their way of thinking, Pharaoh gives in a little, saying, "I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness, only ye shall not go very far away" (Ex 8:28.) Pharaoh says, "I don't mind if you go worship, just don't go to that place where the Lord commanded you to go." But Moses would not compromise. Those he cast off all and go to Christ must indeed go all the way to Christ and him alone.

A third time, Moses comes to Pharaoh and this time Pharaoh asks, "Who are they that shall go?" Moses answered, "We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons, and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds" (Ex 10:9). So Pharaoh proposes yet another compromise, saying, "go now ye that are men, and serve the Lord" (Ex 10:11.) The Lord Jesus Christ will not lose one for whom he died. Every elect, blood-bought man, woman and child shall be brought into his presence in glory. Therefore, again Moses refused Pharaoh's offer.

So finally, Pharaoh gives Moses his best offer yet: Exodus 10: 24: And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you. 25: And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God. 26: Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; The believer can not approach God any other way than in the blood of Christ our Substitute who died in our place on the cross. This last offer of Pharaoh was just that, go worship the Lord but go to him without Christ.

When worshipping the true and living God he will not accept any who compromise. You must, must, must give up all your righteousness and come into God presence robed only in Christ's righteousness. The person who compromises with those who trust a jesus who can not save are compromising with Pharaoh, agreeing to worship in the land of Egypt instead of in the wilderness as God commanded. The sinner who goes out of the camp toward Christ but hangs on to some work he has done, stops short of reaching Christ as all, and he has compromised with Pharaoh and gone "not very far away." The preacher who claims Christ died for everyone and it is up to man's will to make the deciding choice, compromises with Pharaoh to leave behind the old and the women and the children, for Christ's blood effectually saves all for whom he died, leaving no redeemed man, woman or children behind. Ultimately, those who compromise with Pharaoh and come to God with everything except the one thing needful, leave behind God's sacrifice, the Lamb of God, our Redeemer.

By faith Moses did not compromise because he feared God and not the king of Egypt. By faith Moses endured seeing Christ as the issue in every compromise which Pharaoh proposed. So what about you? Will you obey God or man? Will you worship God in truth or compromise with Pharaoh? Will you continue in Egypt or flee to the wilderness where Christ is exalted before God? Will you reverence the King of heaven and earth or will you fear the prince of darkness?

NOTE:
Dear Friends,
As more of you continue to listen in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania I would like to say how much I am encoraged as you download the messages. I hope the Lord will be pleased to use them for your good and his glory. Our mid-week worship service is on Thursday night at 7:00 pm. It is like our Sunday service, we sing songs that glorify our Redeemer, we pray that Christ might continue to be exalted, and we hear a message of the free and sovereign grace in Christ and him crucified. Some who have driven as far as 2 hours for the mid-week service have ended up coming back on a regualar basis. My prayer is that more of you will do the same. I want you to know you are always welcome.

In the Lord's time,
Clay Curtis.
