Hebrews 11: 23: By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. This verse of scripture is not about the faith which Moses possessed. Here it is Moses parents whom we are considering. Moses' parents believed God.
Why did Moses' parents hide him? Remember as Joseph died, he told his brethren how they would fall into slavery in Egypt just as God had told Abraham years and years before. So it came to pass (Exo 1: 7-22.) After Joseph died, a Pharaoh was raised up who did not know Joseph or his brethren. Pharaoh and his followers not only bound the people with oppressive work but he commanded all male Hebrew babies be killed at birth. But there is more. Moses' parents saw a proper child. That is, by the revelation of God, they believed God's promise to deliver Israel out of Egyptian bondage using Moses as their deliverer.
If we would better understand this example of faith it is important that we see the type which the Lord sets before us here by his hand of providence. Pharaoh and his followers is a picture of Satan and his seed. The old serpent's chief motive in the garden was to exalt himself above all. If Pharaoh could have had his way then Christ would have never been born. So it is with our Adversary. That is the motive of all false preachers and their followers. They make men's lives bitter with hard bondage so that the people are prevented from beholding Christ and from opposing their tyrannous rule. But our God is not prevented. In his sovereign power and grace he has sent his Son into the midst of this Egypt. The Lord Jesus Christ delivered his people from fear of death when he broke Satan's binding chains by purging their sin. He is now calling his people out from the bitter bondage of oppressive natural religion through the Holy Spirit (Gen 3: 15; Heb 2:14; Eph 4: 8.) Moses is a picture of Christ our Deliverer.
Therefore, as Moses' parents are set up as an example of faith we behold several things which true faith does.
1. Faith believes God who promises that salvation is of the Lord. By faith, Moses' parents saw. When they saw Moses they beheld God's salvation for them and for their brethren. Like Simeon who held the Lord Jesus Christ in his infancy and declared, "mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people." (Luk 2: 30, 31.)
2. Faith works. Moses parent's not only believed God but, by faith, they also provided for their brethren. They hid Moses. By hiding Moses, his parents did everything God enabled them to do to insure the deliverance of their brethren. True faith believes Christ and does every good thing God enables us to do so that no worldly hindrance interferes with his saints beholding their Redeemer. By their immovable stance for God, Moses' parents proved their faith was genuine.
3. Faith perseveres. Moses' parents hid him for three months. This may not seem like a long time to some but three months living under the constant threat of losing their own lives at Pharaoh's hand helps put it in perspective. Add to this the fact that they believed God even at the end of those three months when, by faith, they made an ark of bulrushes, placed their 3 month old child inside and pushed it out into the Nile River trusting God to provide. That is faith persevering (Heb 10: 38, 39.)
4. Faith fears God. Believing God is beholding and reverencing him as holy and sovereign over all (Isa 8: 12, 13.) If we fear God rather than men it is because we believe that God is able to save to the uttermost, that he will never leave us nor forsake us. Therefore, Moses' parents were not afraid of the king's commandment (Isa 43: 1-4; 51: 7, 8; Heb 13: 5, 6.)
5. Faith is never disappointed. The faith of Moses' parent's is given as an example but it is an encouragement to the believer only when we behold God's faithfulness in bringing to pass their promised salvation. Not only did the Lord spare their son, but the Lord used Pharaoh's riches to raise him up. You are familiar with the account. The Lord directed Pharaoh's own daughter to the river at the moment baby Moses came floating along, she retrieved him, and took him to be her own son. Even better, Moses' mother was called to nurse the infant for Pharaoh's daughter (Exo 2: 5-10.) Then just as the Lord promised Abraham over 400 years before, the Lord delivered Israel with great substance and there, leading the way, was Moses. So shall it be when Christ our Deliver returns and leads us out of this Egypt to be with him forever more.
Faith believes God; faith works; faith perseveres; faith fears God; and by the faithfulness of our great God, faith is never disappointed. May the Lord's word be an encouragement to trust him alone.
