Acts 9: 36: Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.
Grace flows from God to sinners and not from sinners to God. When attempting to understand who God is and how God saves, if we begin with ourselves and work our way to God we always, always, always defend ourselves, exalt ourselves and deny the power of God.
The Faithful God of glory did not depend on you to obey his law because he is able to make it honorable in truth and righteousness by the fidelity of his own Son. God, the Righteous Judge of the whole earth did not depend on you to declare him just in justifying a people because he had the power to manifest his righteousness through the faithfulness of his own Son. The Holy One of Israel did not depend on you to put away your sins and make your self holy in his righteousness because his own Son will receive all the glory for justifying and sanctifying his people. God, full of power and grace, did not wait on Saul of Tarsus to make a decision for Christ because all power in heaven and in earth belongs to Christ our Wisdom, and he draws his people when it pleases him. The Sovereign God of all grace sent Ananias to Saul with the gospel and Peter to Aeneas because Christ the King is able to give pastors after his own heart who feed his people with sound doctrine, with knowledge and understanding, of God's True Christ. Our God did not deliver Aeneas from the trial of his sick bed by any other name but Jesus Christ because he is Jehovah-Rapah, the Lord who healeth thee. So it is here, the Lord filled Tabitha with his Spirit--the Spirit of Wisdom--making her wise-hearted, giving her a willing heart, creating within her a spirit which stirred her up to provide for these poor widows in his church. That he might receive all the glory.
If we believe this fruit can come forth by the will and work of sinful, lying, wretched sinner's then we believe something that is not found anywhere in the Word of God. We are reasoning from man to God and not from God to man. God saves irresistibly, triumphantly, in righteousness and truth, by his own power alone, that Christ might have the preeminence in all things...or God does not save at all! When we begin with God and work our way down to you and I, we will find that we are always last in the equation and all that we have to say about ourselves is that we are sinner's saved by the power and grace of God, nothing else.
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21: Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20.)
