Acts 9: 36: Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. It is our faithful God, who through Christ Jesus fills the believer with faith toward God and love for their brethren. He receives all the glory and praise. Tabitha was a believer. She was a certain disciple: a chosen, child of God, redeemed by Christ's blood, born of the Holy Spirit. She believed on Christ, followed him in baptism, and was made a willing student of the sound doctrine of Christ and him crucified--she was a certain disciple. Her name by interpretation is called Dorcas--an elegant gazelle.
This was an appropriate name for Tabitha. She was full of good works, that is, she made her living honestly and conducted herself honestly before all men. Tabitha was a seamstress. That may seem insignificant, but she found a way to use it for the good of her brethren.
Tabitha was full of almsdeeds, that is, she was full of mercy and love toward her brethren. She gave to the poor saints in the church at Lydda. All the widows (those too poor to provide for themselves) stood by [Peter] weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them (v39.) She did not intend to do these things then use her sinful flesh as an excuse for not following through. (Isa 32: 7, 8.) Those to whom the Lord Jesus Christ has liberally shed his grace upon are not takers but liberal givers.
In all things believers endeavor to liberally conduct themselves as a pattern of good works: in doctrine they are not corrupt. Believers press upon sinners the gravity of knowing the true and living God. They are not hypocritical but sincere, honest with sinners. A believer speaks sound speech, that cannot be condemned because they speak according to the scriptures. Those who hate Christ have no evil thing to say of them. God's servants are obedient to their masters, they don't talk back, they are not thieves, but they show all good fidelity (Tit 2: 1-10.)
Tabitha's behavior was becoming of holiness. She was a teacher of good things in word and example to the young believers at Joppa. This was not something Tabitha performed grudgingly or out of necessity, but this is how she was. She cheerfully adorned the gospel of God our Savior in both faith and deportment. Like Tabitha, those to whom God has given in abundance will find a way to abundantly give to their brethren.
