ZEBULON BAPTIST CHURCH Weekly Bulletin Sunday, June 29th, 2008
Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel. Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face. I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. Psalm 69: 6-9
UNBELIEVING IS MISTRUST Unbelief is not necessarily failure to acknowledge the truth. You can acknowledge or assent to something being true and still be unbelieving.UNBELIEVING IS MISTRUST. It is failure to trust a person. Abraham believed God,yet there were times when he did not trust Him. Twice he let Sarah go into a Harem because he did not trust God to take care of him. Unbelief is actually the sin from which all other sins come! This is what Satan used to tempt Eve. "Hath God said..." Satan did not mean, "Did God really make that statement?" He meant, "You don't have to believe what He said implicitly." "You shall not surely die." The stress and worry we have is nothing more than unbelief! It is a failure to trust God! The lack of assurance we have is unbelief. It is failure to trust Christ. From this sin (unbelief) comes all other sins! "How can a believer have unbelief?" someone asks. Because of the flesh. An unbeliever has nothing but unbelief. A believer has faith; but he still has unbelief and has need to cry daily, "Lord, I believe, help Thou mine unbelief!" Pastor Todd Nibert
TRUE HOLINESS "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit:" John 3:6
There is no promise made that we shall be set free in this life from the in-being and the in-working of sin. Many think that they are to become progressively holier and holier, that sin after sin is to be removed gradually out of the heart, until at last they are almost perfect in the flesh. But this is an idle dream, and one which, sooner or later in the case of God's people, will be rudely and roughly broken to pieces. Nature will ever remain the same; and we shall ever find that the flesh will lust against the spirit.
Our Adam nature is corrupt to the very core. It cannot be mended, it cannot be satisfied, it is at the last what it was at the first, inherently evil and such will never cease to be corrupt till we put off mortality and with it the body of sin and death. All we can hope for, long after, expect, and pray for is that this evil nature may be subdued, kept down, mortified, crucified, and held in subjection under the power of grace. But as to any such change passing upon it or taking place in it as to make it holy, it is but a pharisaic delusion, which, promising a holiness in the flesh, leaves us still under the power of sin while it opposes with deadly enmity that true sanctification of the new man of grace, which is wrought by a divine power and is utterly distinct from any fancied holiness in the flesh or any vain dream of its progressive sanctification. J.C. Philpot
ABLE TO SAVE "Able to save" means something more than just delivering men from hell. "Able to save" is the whole work of salvation from the first conviction of sin to complete glorification. Christ is not only "able to save" those who REPENT, but He is able to make men repent. Christ is not only "able to save" those who BELIEVE, but He is able to give a new heart and work faith in men. Christ is not only "able to save" those who CONTINUE IN THE FAITH, but He is able to keep us from falling and give us a holy desire to be like Him. Pastor Henry Mahan
"HOW CAN MAN BE JUSTIFIED WITH GOD" Job 25:4
1. The JUSTIFIER--"It is God that justifies." The sentence of acquittal must come from HIS lips and be registered in His books.
2. The JUSTIFIED--man, the sinner, under wrath, the ungodly, the condemned.
3. The JUSTIFYING FACT--the death of Him whose name is Jehovah our Righteousness.
4. The JUSTIFYING INSTRUMENT--faith. Not strong faith, nor great faith, nor perfect faith, but simply faith, or believing. "We are justified by faith."
5. The JUSTIFYING MEDIUM--the righteousness of God. This is the "best robe" which is prepared for the prodigal. By it he is clothed, beautified, made fit to enter his Father's house and sit down at his Father's table. Christ is Himself our justification. In Him we "stand." In Him we are "found." Him we "put on." With Him we are clothed; by Him we are protected as by a shield; in Him we take refuge as in a strong tower.
"FOUND IN HIM!" What then? Our own "self" has disappeared; instead there is Christ, the beloved Son in whom God is well pleased. Horatius Bonar (I808-1889)
"AS TRUE OF THE SOUL AS OF THE BODY!" We will be emptied of self before we will be filled with grace; we will be stripped of our rags before we will be clothed in His righteousness; unclothed that we may be clothed; wounded that we may be healed; killed that we may live; buried in shame that we may rise in holy glory. These words, "sown in corruption, that we may be raised in incorruption; sown in dishonor, that we may be raised in glory; sown in weakness, that we may be raised in power," ARE AS TRUE OF THE SOUL AS OF THE BODY! To borrow an illustration from the surgeon's art: the bone that is set wrong must be broken again in order that it may be set aright. My friend, it is certain that a soul filled with self has no room for God. Like the inn at Bethlehem, crowded with worldly guests, a heart filled with pride and godless companions has "no room" within which Christ, the hope of glory, may be born in us. Thomas Guthrie (1780-1873)
