The Bible warns us of an emergency in 2nd Timothy 4:3-4, "For a time will be when they will not endure sound doctrine, but they will heap up teachers to themselves according to their own lusts, tickling the ear. And they will turn away their ears from the truth and will be turned to myths" (MKJV).
This emergency is in the area of theology and doctrine. The word "theology" is simply the study of God and "doctrine" means teaching. The text says, "For the time will come..." when these things will happen. That time is now! It has been here, especially the past 150 years of theological and doctrinal decline, but most are simply asleep because they have been born into a whole generation that was already used to hearing a false gospel of freewill, works-religion.
Many churches of today are crammed-packed full of overflowing crowds that are NOT being fed a steady diet of sound, consistent gospel doctrine and theology, but rather folks are distracted by shallow and weak entertainment based, empty sermons. Many are being taught man-centered, humanistic versions of fictional salvation that does not have a Biblical foundation.
When the average church goer is asked to tell you about their God they run out of words in a couple of minutes. They could just as well tell of their favorite actor or actress for hours. Many preachers are not far behind their church members and they get paid a salary on top of it. What a rip-off the church is receiving for their money in those cases! What has caused this mass movement of ignorance in religion in our day and age? What has caused people to follow and even pay preachers who refuse to be questioned or challenged in what they believe and teach? If you read the word of God and then see what the average church teaches today you have to really wonder what the two have in common. If the shoe does not fit here then you and your church are one of the rare few.
The Bible is loaded with warning after warning. Here are just a few verses followed by a few questions of mine (all quotes are from the Modern King James Version);
"Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves" (Mat 7:15). Read this in its context and you will see that there are "many" false prophets and "few" who are teaching truth or even believe the truth. This means MOST who fall under the name "Christian" are lying. Non-christian are not even considered in the text.
"But I fear lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve in his craftiness, so your thoughts should be corrupted from the simplicity due to Christ. For if, indeed, the one coming proclaims another Jesus, whom we have not proclaimed, or if you receive another spirit, which you did not receive, or another gospel, which you never accepted..." (2 Cor 11:3-4). Paul here spells out clearly there is "another gospel" that contains "another Jesus" and they are powered by "another spirit". That is what we are dealing with today. All these others ("another") are what false religion is built on and it dominates the religious world of so-called Christianity..
"As we said before, and now I say again, If anyone preaches a gospel to you beside what you have received, let him be accursed" (Gal 1:9). Here is laid out the seriousness of a false gospel. The word "accursed" in the original language means "damned". What a sobering thought! This is not a religious game. This is a serious warning about what is going on right now and the result of the lies being taught.
"Beware lest anyone rob you through philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ" (Col 3:8). The false message of all false prophets contain many words but all according to vain and worthless things not based on the truth of God and the gospel of Christ.
"But evil men and seducers will go forward to worse, deceiving and being deceived" (2 Tim 3:13). This was written around 2000 years ago. How much worse is it now?
"Let not anyone deceive you by any means. For that Day shall not come unless there first comes a falling away (apostasy),.." (2 Thes 2:3). This too, was written some 2000 years ago and it is the description of the great apostasy or falling away from the truth that I am talking about. Most preachers are not even saying there is a problem as they rock their congregations to sleep.
"..holding fast the faithful Word according to the doctrine, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and to convict the gainsayers. For there are indeed many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers,... whose mouth you must stop, who subvert whole houses, teaching things not right for the sake of ill gain" (Titus 1:9-11). Here is some more warning about false preachers with special emphasis on their money grubbing ways.
"Little children, it is the last time. And just as you have heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have risen up, from which we know that it is the last hour" (1 John 2:18). Many sermons are preached on "the Anti-Christ" and many books and movies are made that talk about him but nearly 2000 years ago when this was written the Apostle John warned about the spirit of antichrist that was already present back then, which distracted people and continues to distract from the truth of the grace of Christ in the gospel.
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but try (test) the spirits to see if they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). Again, the redundant words of the Apostles in their warnings of the "many" false prophets. What would they say today if they were sitting in the average church?
This is an urgent wake-up call! It is not a very politically correct one, I know, but it is a loving and caring one. The time of renewal, reformation and revival is now. Prove all things by the word of God. Know what you believe. Understand what is being said and taught. Do not be gullible. Be careful with your money and time when it comes to religion. The Truth shall set you free. Is that what you are hearing? Be sure in this time of virtual famine of the Truth in our day.
