The virtual worship of the present leader of North Korea, which is inextricably tied to devotion to his father, is truly alive and well. Children learn to say "Thank you Father Kim Il Sung" as they learn to talk. They move on eventually to "mandatory adult education classes held in the workplace or shrine-like buildings called ‘Kim Il Sung Revolutionary Idea Institutes' " Here is documentation: excerpts of refugee interviews from the new book A Prison Without Bars by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (free online).
"We call it the Kim Il Sung Institute of Revolutionary Ideas. Attendance is mandatory... the history of Kim Il Sung's life is displayed on the walls with his pictures. They use chapters and verses like the Christian Bible... I used to be a section leader. We used to burn our own clothes... in order to keep meeting because there were not enough candles."
"We often spend some of our own money... we decorate rooms with red-colored wallpaper and pictures...When I was young, I used to wear my best dress and bow my head in prayer before the portraits [of the Kims] on occasions such as national holidays. Your family members force you to do that. It's like your religion... When people experience miraculous happenings... they come in first in a race or don't get hurt from a fall, we...say ‘thank the General Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.' "
"If you are absent... there are political consequences..."
"It's mandatory [the Kim Institute]... you go or your ideology will be questioned. However, nobody will go there voluntarily. We don't do it at home, ... It's ridiculous."
[The difference between North Korea and the final world ruler is that antichrist will have access to technology that will permit him to enforce his ways at home, too, through the ever-present television or computer screen.]
"[The Institute] is located in the best place in every village... From birth North Koreans are educated to think that they owe Kim Il Sung ... their lives and existence..."
"One is not allowed to think about the reason why people have to obey."
"Everyone wears the Kim Il Sung badge on their chest. Otherwise, the person is a political offender. Even saying a word about the difficulties of practicing Kimilsungism can make the person a political offender. To show loyalty, North Koreans participate in study meetings, repentance (self-criticism) meetings, and lectures..."
"The purpose of hanging the pictures [of the Kims] is to worship Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. There is a ritual done before the pictures, [part of which says] ‘If a fire breaks out, people would show their loyalty by running into the fire to save the portraits. Anyone who gets burned doing this would win commendation.' "
"When I was a child, I was taught that [Kim] was a ‘god of the sun,' so I thought he really was a sun."
"If a person openly complains, then that person disappears the next day. Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are god. They are deified and they should be considered as an ultimate."
Here is truly a picture of the coming antichrist . "Anti" is not just against but also in place of. Satan's method in North Korea is a flagrant act of defiantly replacing the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord of all. It is no accident that what you just read reminds you of our own Christian practices:
Teaching children to worship at the earliest age possible
Some of the finest buildings in the best areas set aside for worship and study
Books that have chapters and verses like the Bible
Self-sacrifice, financial sacrifice for the cause of the Leader
Judgment for the disobedient
Dress up for meetings
"Repentance"
And from pagan religions: worship of pictures (icons), the "god of the sun."
Kim is not very subtle. How he came to hate Christ so is not clear, but we do not despair in our prayers for his government and his land. Christ truly can do anything. Let us keep believing for the huge victory that one day must come. Jesus alone is worthy of all the praise and all the worship and all the obedience. He will be glorified!
