A prison without bars

I commend to your attention today, and for several days to come, a production of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, published in March of 2008. It is A Prison Without Bars , refugee and defector testimonies of severe violations of freedom of religion or belief in North Korea.

As I believe all such work should be, there are no copyright restrictions. You are free to go there now and print it out from your computer as I did:

http://www.uscirf.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2180&Itemid=1

As another work from which I quoted extensively on this site, the present work is simply and factually written, giving the stories of refugees as they were reported to the interviewers, of course translated into English. And as then, the facts are enough.

The USCIRP team interviewed 32 persons who fled to China from 2003-2007, and 6 former NK security agents. The story they tell is amazingly the same as stories which came out a decade ago and before. Refugees are still subjected to interrogation and punishment when contacting religious groups or South Koreans. Those who confess to either crime can be tortured.

If there is change, some of it at least is in the wrong direction. There is increased police activity in the NK area bordering China. Agents interviewed told of their being sent into Korean-Chinese churches, posing as pastors so as to gain information about "traitors." Still others formed fake house church groups in North Korea to entice and expose true believers.

Protestantism continues to grow and be a threat to the security of the Korean government, or so it is perceived. Shamanism in the form of exorcists and fortune-tellers is also on the rise, and draws a cross section of spiritually hungry Koreans, all the way into government circles.

In spite of all, Kimilsungism and Juche continue to be the guiding light of the Korean people. The proper attitude toward the Pyongyang power center is the only ticket to success in the land. And so most everyone complies.

Human rights abuses in North Korea continue to be so great as to call for the authors of this and other reports to ask for a U.N. Security Council intervention. I'm not sure how potent such a move would be, given the U.N.'s dismal record of non-success in the nation so far. But intervention they need, for sure! We are asking God individually, and in groups, and in whole churches, and by offerings, and by missionaries, and by sending of Christian literature, and a host of other projects, to set North Korea free.

Excerpts from actual interviews next time.
