Hyok Kang's This Is Paradise relates how Communist youth in North Korea are twisted early in their thinking about Americans and South Koreans and Japanese. Before the child can grow and form his own assessments about the nations of the world, Government-sponsored propaganda has whittled down acceptable people groups to a precious few, with the star being of course their own nation. We Westerners understand patriotism and national pride, but we also like to give the benefit of the doubt to a host of countries that are not exactly the same as our own. Math problems similar to the following have been included in North Korean textbooks:
Our "People's Army" has just been fighting the American imperialist dogs and the South Korean puppets. We have taken 14, 892 prisoners. There were 1543 more American [another insulting term] than there were South Korean puppets. How many American dogs + South Korean puppets were there altogether? A wonderful little girl who is a part of the Young Pioneers, has been chosen to be a messenger to our patriotic troops fighting against the occupying Japanese. She is asked to bring a message in a basket. In the basket also are five apples. But she is stopped by a Japanese soldier at a checkpoint. The wretched Japanese actually eats three of her apples! How many are left? During the Korean War 487 Chinese soldiers join up with 63 Rusian soldiers and 913 of our own patriotic fighters from the DPRK. Their mission is to repel the invasion of the puppets of South Korea. How many have joined together for this monumental effort? That's carrying "practical" math a bit far, don't you think? Our constant prayer is that North Korea will soon have an invasion of Truth led by none other than The Truth Himself, Jesus the Christ. He in His people cannot lie. Truth brings light and power and a whole lot more to a society. Lord, pour mighty doses over this land!
