What could be worse than 1984?

Christopher Hitchens, "Slate" internet magazine, May, 2005, gets the credit for today's comments, and I've given you a link to his entire article below. He points out that, although George Orwell in 1948 came up with what might have been considered a "horror story" in that day, the novel 1984 , North Korea has topped Orwell's imaginings by far. In fact, the original Kim and Orwell started their work at roughly the same time. Hitchens says it's like Kim got hold of "an early copy of the novel and used it as a blueprint."

Then embellished it. And Kim's finished product was far worse than Orwell's description of a future society the world might be heading towards. Here are some other points of Hitchens' article:

  • Far from criticizing Bush's mention of the fact that today's leader runs concentration camps, Hitchens avers that the "Democratic People's Republic" of Korea IS a concentration camp, aka a slave state.
  • There's something about the working of the American conscience that is called into play when it sees horror-filled situations as exist in North Korea.
  • Never in Nazi Germany or in the Russian gulag, or in Mao's China were ALL the subjects of the system actually enslaved! But in North Korea, they are.
  • In NK, every person is mere property, owned by one family. Every minute of every day is spent in absolute subjection.
  • In Orwell's novel, one could get alone on a walk, rent property, etc. Not in NK. NK has a curfew for all.
  • Everything is broken in NK, except the police and armed forces.
  • At least in slavery, the master fed his servants. Not so in NK. Millions have died from starvation.
  • Survivors of the famine have grown up stunted and malformed.
  • Whole towns have been ruined and abandoned. Mines flooded beyond repair. Factories idle.
  • People run away but at the risk of their lives.
  • It's time to move these people to South Korea, America, China. The more and the sooner, the better. Involved nations need to get together and work out a plan that makes it feasible to get Koreans OUT and FED.

Until then, thank God for His church that PRAYS, meets and ministers to refugees, gets Bibles in, supports ministry inside NK. May their tribe increase.

Weep and pray for North Korea! Let it touch your heart until you are filled with Christ's pain! I know the two Korean presidents have signed an agreement. I know 6 nations are talking as I speak to you. But so far I have not heard of one concentration camp dismantled, one prisoner released, one refugee sent back without consequences. Until there is fruit produced, we must pray for the tree to be cut down!
