Romans 9: 13: As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

Scripture declares plainly those things which had nothing to do with God's love toward Jacob.

It was not because Jacob was the son of Abraham. Ishmael and Esau were both sons of Abraham yet God passed them both over. (Rom 9: 6-9.) The Lord's love for Jacob had nothing to do with who his parents were. Esau and Jacob were twins, conceived at the same time with the same parents. (Rom 9: 10.) The Lord's love for Jacob was irrespective of any good or evil in Jacob. God is no respecter of persons. Jacob was chosen before he was born. (Rom 9: 11.) It was not that Jacob was born first and therefore the crown rights went to him. Jacob was the younger of the two. (Rom 9: 12.)

The fact is God's love is not based on anything outside of God's sovereign choice. The purpose of God in election is that our salvation is not because of anything in us, but of God that called us by his own holy right to do so. God loved Jacob and hated Esau simply according to his own purpose and grace. He viewed Jacob in Christ therefore he loved Jacob freely. The Lord viewed Esau in Adam therefore he hated him just as he hates all workers of iniquity. (Eph 1: 11; I Tim 2: 9.) We can not reply negatively without replying against God, exalting ourselves and forsaking our own mercy.
