Him Who Had Promised

Hebrews 11: 11: Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. 12: Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

One writer said Jehovah who can not lie is "An Almighty Promiser that can never out-promise himself." It is not the greatness of the promise that our faith rests in "but the greatness, blessedness, and faithfulness of the Promiser."

The Lord promised Sara a son when she was past age. Through this promised son, that nation which the Lord promised to Abraham would be born, so Isaac must be born or God's faithfulness is vanity. From Isaac, spiritual Israel would be born whom God had chosen and put in Christ before the foundation of the world, so Isaac must be born or God's covenant to his Son is vanity. Through this promised son, the promised Seed--Christ--would be born, so Isaac must be born or God's name, his salvation, the glory promised his own Son is at stake. This is why God blessed Sara with the gift of faith, why Sara believed God, why God increased Sara's strength, and why God brought forth his promise just as he said he would.

Faith's contentment to believe God rests in an understanding that everything God does around me, for me and through me, is to bring to pass that which glorifies his great name. Therefore, because God will be glorified, God is faithful to fulfill all his promises to me. Therefore we judge him faithful and rest in him to fulfill his promises (Lam 3: 22-26; Pro 3: 5,6.)
