Looking for the City
Hebrews 11: 10: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Abraham looked for the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. This city is the place for which all believers look. Its foundations are built by God on the chief corner stone, Christ Jesus the Lord. He is the Living Stone rejected of men but chosen of God and precious. The foundation of this city is the Stone upon which the disobedient stumble, the Stone rejected of the builders which has become the Head Cornerstone. This city has continual foundations built by God through his everlasting love; through his everlasting covenant of grace, ordered in all things and sure. God's divine electing grace placed his people in this Foundation Stone. This city has foundations made up of our brethren on which you are built up by God (Eph 2: 20; Rev 21: 14; Isa 54:11.)
Holy God is the maker of this city so none shall enter but those who have been made holy by the Lord Jesus Christ. Eternal God is the builder so this city shall last forever. Immutable God is the maker so this city shall never change. The citizens of this city were chosen, redeemed and called into this city so none shall be lost. Faith's hope is this city where our King Messiah reigns.
It was looking for this city that made Abraham consider that temporal land of Canaan as a place which he was just passing through. Are you a pilgrim passing through? By faith Abraham was persuaded that God would bring him into this inheritance. Are you persuaded? By faith this city wherein the Son of Righteousness sits in all his majesty was the one place Abraham longed to be. Is the city of God your hope? Then here are three good scriptures to keep mind as we pass through this place on our way to Christ our Savior.
Hebrews 12:28: Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
Hebrews 13:14: For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
I Peter 2: 11: Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 12: Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
