THE PURPOSE OF GOD IN ELECTION
Acts 3: 25: Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26: Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
The purpose of God in election is to glorify his Son Jesus. Free grace glorifies God's Son because it manifests that the salvation of Christ's redeemed has always been established in the faith which God's chosen Son Jesus has toward the Father and not according to the good or evil of those chosen in Christ. If God will open our hearts we will see it in the passage before us.
Those to whom Peter spoke were indeed the natural descendants of the prophets. Yet, like their fathers, they had rejected and even killed God's messengers. They were, indeed, the sons of Abraham according to natural genealogy. Yet, they rejected the God Abraham believed. Without a doubt, they had heard of the covenant of salvation which God made with their father Abraham. Still, they killed the Holy and Just One through whom God promised Abraham's salvation. If that was not enough rebellion, in their spiritual separation from God, after all this, they still imagined that they were accepted by God based on their law-obedience.
Yet, because God had chosen a remnant from among them before the foundation of the world, because the one offering of Christ Jesus the Lord had perfected every one of God's elect forever, and because God would not allow one to perish for whom his Son died, in spite of all their idolatry, with the blood of the Author of life still fresh on their hands, Peter declared the gospel to the remnant in their midst, saying, "Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities."
When God reveals in us that we are as guilty before him as these sinners were, yet he still sends his Son Jesus to bless us, we will cease to accuse God of unrighteousness for choosing whomsoever he will. Instead, we fall at Christ's feet in thankful reverence and praise, amazed that God would open the gates of heaven in spite of our being such vile worms. Not until we truly find ourselves at the feet of Christ will we discover that the purpose of God in election, like the whole purpose of God, is not according to our good or evil, but to glorify his Son Jesus.
