ZEBULON BAPTIST CHURCH Weekly Bulletin Sunday, April 27th, 2008
Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence. They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. Psalm 62:1-5
I know that whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever. Ecclesiastes 3:14 Anything that man does must wither and die. No work of man has or can last forever. This is why the Old Covenant of works can never prosper among our race, for it depends on what men do. As the works of men fail, so must fail any scheme of salvation based upon such works. But, - what unimaginable comfort lies here - what God has done must last forever. And what has he done? "It is finished", which was to say "I have done it." He hath obtained eternal redemption," He has, "saved to the uttermost them that come to God by Him," He has, "born our sins in His body on the tree," He has, "reconciled the world to Himself," He has, "fulfilled the righteousness of the law." To wit, He has done all that is necessary to assure the salvation of all His elect. And what He has done shall last forever. Pastor Joe Terrell
Regeneration - The New Birth The new birth is an imperative necessity because the natural man is altogether devoid of spiritual life. It is not that he is ignorant and needs instruction: it is not that he is feeble and needs invigorating: it is not that he is sickly and needs doctoring. His case is far, far worse. He is dead in trespasses and sins. This is no poetical figure of speech: it is a solemn reality, little as it is perceived by the majority of people. The sinner is lifeless and needs quickening. He is a spiritual corpse, and needs bringing from death unto life...
What, then, is the new birth? We answer, it is not the removal of anything from the sinner, nor the changing of anything in the sinner. The new birth is the impartation of the new nature. When I was born the first time I received from my parents their nature; so, when I was born again, I received from God His nature. The Spirit of God begets within us a spiritual nature: as we read in II Peter 1:4. "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature."
"That which is born of the Spirit is spirit." The child always partakes of the nature of his parents. That which is born of man is human; that which is born of God is divine. That which is born of man is sinful, and that which is born of God is spiritual. Here, then, is the character or nature of the new birth. It is not the reformation of the outward man, it is not the education of the natural man, it is not the purification of the old man, but it is the creation of a new man. It is a Divine begetting (James 1:18). It is a birth of the Spirit (John 3:6). It is a being made a new creation (II Corinthians 5:17). It is a becoming a partaker of the Divine nature (II Peter 1:4). It is being born into God's family. Every born again person has, therefore, two natures within him: one which is carnal, the other which is spiritual. These two natures are contrary the one to the other (Galatians 5:17), and in consequence, there is an unceasing warfare going on within the Christian. It is only the grace of God which can subdue the old nature; and it is only the Word of God which can feed the new nature. Arthur Pink
HEAR HIM "And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him" ( Matt. 17:5; Luke 9:35). On this occasion the Lord Jesus was glorified before the apostles. There also appeared with Him Moses and Elijah when He was transfigured. Both Moses and Elijah were occupied and discussing the Lord's death. When Peter saw this glorious sight he thought that it might be good to build three tabernacles honoring them, Moses the great Lawgiver and Elijah the mighty prophet of God. About this time God was pleased to overshadow them with a cloud and to speak out of heaven unto the disciple. The instructions of God were plain and simple, "Hear Him." Peter, don't build, don't sacrifice, don't worship Moses and Elijah, "Hear Him." The command of God is as appropriate today as it was then, "Hear Him." God has given the whole testimony of scripture as an accurate record to bear witness to the glorious person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ, "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself" (Luke 24:27). May God give us grace to do these four things.
1). Receive with confident conviction the truth to which God bears witness. Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of the most high God, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation (John 14:6). God is only well pleased with those in Him (Eph.1:6).
2). Because of who He is we should hear Him with profound reverence, "Holy and reverend is His name" (Psa.111:9). His teachings are not the philosophy of men, but rather the doctrine of God , "My doctrine is not mine but His that sent me" (John 7:17). Therefore we should quickly receive His word as, "light" and "life" as the only foundation of faith .
3). We should hear Him with unconditional obedience. God told king Saul that it was better to obey than to sacrifice (1Sam.15:22). We are commanded to repent and believe the gospel (Acts 17:30). Our Lord said, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned" (Mark 16:15-16). May God give life and grace to hear and obey Him.
4). Hear Him with joyful confidence. We can believe His word and trust His grace with certain expectation that the Lord Jesus Christ; fulfilled and honored God's holy law, made full and eternal redemption for our sin, entered into glory as our forerunner and is seated at God's right hand (Heb. 1:3; 6:17-20; 9:12).
