FORSAKING TREASURE FOR FOOLS GOLD

Matthew 19: 16: And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17: And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18: He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19: Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20: The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21: Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22: But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

The rich, young, ruler had no idea that Jesus is God, yet he called Jesus, "Good." The Lord's reply is as if to say, "Why do you call me good? There is none good but God and you don't believe that I am He." The proof that the rich, young, ruler loved the profit of his own hand, is that he forsook the Treasure for fools gold. If he would have believed then he would not have come to Christ seeking acceptance by his own doing. Instead, he would have rejoiced that he had come to the end of the law for righteousness and beheld before his eyes, Eternal Life.

If we are seeking acceptance with God by what we have done--whether obedience to the law of Sinai or whether claiming to believe Christ while looking to the epistles with the same dead, legal heart that we once looked to Moses law--we must sell everything in which we place our strength. We must give ourselves away. It is a necessity that we take our place bearing Christ's cross which shall surely mean offending those who hate that salvation is totally finished in him apart from the works of religion. And for the rest of our days we must continue to follow him.

We will either bow to Christ in faith, thanking him for the heart to do so. Or we will continue on in the legalism-of-self-salvation because it would cause us too much sorrow to part with the gold of fools.

Let us examine ourselves. What message do we delight in--law or grace? It is time to seriously consider how we are attempting to come to God? It is time to ask ourselves, "What think ye of Christ?"
