Christ's Last Battle (Matthew 26:36-46)
Scott Richardson is pastor emeritus at Katy Baptist Church in Fairmont, WV.
When Christ entered the garden of Gethsemane and began his last battle, he desired that Peter, James and John be with him. The Father denied him their comfort and presence. It was the purpose of God that he would fight this battle alone. He who knew no sin was made sin, and this was his cup. The scripture says that his sorrow commenced as he entered the gloomy garden.
From the day of his circumcision, when his blood was first shed and he became bound to obey the whole law and to suffer its penalty, he took upon him the weight and burden of sin. Until he came to the garden, he tasted as it were, the first drops of that bitter cup, but now he would drain the cup to the last drop. Now alone, and with none to help, the darling of God's bosom shall know by experience the words "Awake O sword against my Shepherd." This was the hour of the power of darkness. He was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.
No tongue of humanity can express what his holy soul endured. What a load of sin and guilt; what a weight of sin and wrath he did bear. Under the waves and billows of God's wrath that he bore, he sweat as it were, great drops of blood. When he had drunk the cup of sorrow and anguish, having given obedience to the requirement of the law, He cried with a loud voice, "IT IS FINISHED!" and laid down his life and gave up the ghost.
He was made sin that his people might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Sin cannot be separated from its penalty!
Worthless Knowledge of the TRUTH
Joe Terrell is pastor of Grace Community Church in Rock Valley, IA
When Knowledge of the truth does not lead us to worship the Lord in love with a sense of awe, it is evidence that our knowledge of the truth has not gone beyond our brains - it has not penetrated our hearts.
Divine truth was not given to make us intelligent, but to make us wise unto true salvation manifested in a heart-felt worship of the God who made us and redeemed us by his Son. It is true there is no getting to the heart without going through the brain; for the heart cannot receive what the brain does not know. But we must strive so that the truth does not get stuck in our brains and go no further.
Truth in the brain puffs up with pride; truth in the heart bends the knee to Christ.
Jack Shanks, New Caney Baptist Church in New Caney, Texas.
A little boy is telling his Grandma how "everything" is going wrong in his life. Meanwhile Grandma is baking a cake. She asks the child if he would like a snack. "Here. Have some cooking oil." "Yuck," says the boy. "How about some raw eggs?" "Gross Grandma." "Would you like some flour then? Or maybe some baking soda?" "Grandma, those are all yucky!"
Grandma replies, "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves, but when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake! So, many times God works the same way. We wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! Trust Him to make something wonderful!"
THEY FOLLOW ME
John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
It is a compromise of the gospel and a belittling of the power of the Lord's hand to save for a man to say that there are believers among those who sit under a false gospel. Not one place in scripture do we find the Lord saving a person and leaving them under the power and influence of lies. The fact is scripture declares that Christ brings his sheep out from among the unclean when he calls them by name; they hear his voice and follow him. On the other hand, it is Satan's mode of operation to sow tares among the wheat; it is wolves who creep in among the sheep unawares; never the other way around.
GOD'S UNSTOPPABLE GOSPEL
Acts 4: 1: And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2: Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3: And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. 4: Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
GOD WILL GLORIFY HIS SON THROUGH THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST WHICH PROCLAIMS SALVATION TO BE OF THE LORD, APART FROM ANY WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS WHICH WE HAVE DONE. THOUGH FALSE PROPHETS AND VAIN DECEIVERS DO ALL THEY CAN TO STOP GOD'S MESSENGERS AND HIS GOSPEL, CARNAL MINDS HAVE NEVER ONCE SUCCEEDED IN THEIR GOD-HATING ENDEAVORS.
