LYING TO GOD

Acts 5: 3: But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4:...why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, tricked every one in the church into thinking that they brought the full price of their sale when in reality they kept back a part of it for themselves. The one thing this couple loved more than money and the world was the praise of men. Perhaps they thought it wise to save back a part for a rainy day. If they would have truly been freed from the yoke of bondage by Christ the Lord, they could have kept back or given as freely as their heart directed. But their hypocrisy was lying to God the Holy Spirit.

First, they lied to the Spirit of God because with the mouth they drew near unto God when in reality their heart was far from him (I Sa 16: 6,7; Lk 19: 13-14; Mt 23: 5-12.) Secondly, they lied to the Spirit of God because they lied to his people. The Lord considers that which is done or not done in truth to his people as being done unto the Lord himself (Mt. 25: 45,46; Ex 16:8; Is 17:13.) Finally, Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Spirit because they imagined they had the power to get away with their show of religion. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting (Galatians 6:7, 8.) May we beseech God by his mercy to save us from our own deceptive hearts! The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jer 17:9.)
