James 1:19: Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

WHEREFORE
Since it is by the Word of truth that the believer is conceived, (V18), since it is by the sincere milk of the Word that believers grow, (I Peter 2:2), since it is by the Word that believers are comforted (I Thess. 4:18), and since it is by the Word that believers will be confirmed unto the end (I Co 1: 4-9,) the Holy Spirit gives us instruction on how brethren receive God's Word.

BE SWIFT TO HEAR, SLOW TO SPEAK, SLOW TO WRATH
The Pharisees exhibited the opposite of these characteristics toward the Lord Jesus Christ. The first message that the Word of truth ever preached, declared that salvation is by the sovereign, electing grace of God in Christ, in whom sinners are made complete. "And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong" (Luke 4:28,29.)

Over the course of one day, the Pharisees attempted to entangle Christ in his words by using the Herodians, the Sadducees, and one of their own best lawyers, all of which the Word silenced. The scribes and Pharisees claimed by their words to be doing "all for the glory of God." However, everything they did was in defense of their dead, rotting corpses. Therefore they were swift to speak instead of to hear the Word of truth. Their wrath was against Christ, the Word of truth.
