The Biblical Doctrine of Substitution
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
(2 Corinthians 5:21)
What an exchange! What a voluntary act of substitution! How marvelous! Yonder debtor visited by his Chief Creditor Who condescends to become a prisoner and renders Himself liable to all His demands, that the debtor may go free! Was ever such a thing heard of among mortals? "Scarcely for a righteous man would one die; yet, peradventure, for a good man some would even dare to die; but God commended His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners." (Rom. 5:7-8)
