"Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep and say, "Spare your people, O LORD, and make not your heritage a reproach, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'""
There is a time for weeping from preachers; it is not all laughter and joy. If we’ll be honest about our congregations, and especially the lost, then we’ll have plenty of reasons to be concerned. We won’t only say, “God is sovereign,” and we’ll do more than preach. We’ll cry out to God with broken hearts, because he’s the only one who can help.
You want a weeping preacher, who takes his tears to the Lord… who knows your danger, the difficulty, and the impossibility of the most eloquent sermon moving one spiritual muscle. You need a man who is helpless, but cares.
Do we weep over Nigeria, and the many places overcome by false gospels? Or, do we merely post online with laughter, grabbing our stomachs with hilarity, as we talk about and rebuke false prophets?
I fear for us. We are a laughing generation that DOESN’T CARE. Everything is funny. Everyone wants a laugh.
No, weeping preachers are needed, because they are heard! Joel 2:18 - "Then the LORD became jealous for his land and had pity on his people." May God give us hearts that care… that ache and agonize over the wretched state of mankind, and plead with Christ for mercy.
