Comfort in God’s Redemption

“Thus saith thy LORD, the LORD, and thy GOD who pleadeth the cause of his people...”

(Isa. 51:22)

Before we are made to see the intercession of Christ on our behalf, God will make us know our need for Him as our Advocate to plead our cause in His High Court of Justice. He will make us know our guiltiness before His law and justice and our mouths stopped as sinners worthy of condemnation. But O the joy that by the Spirit of God when He makes us see that He is already there as that God appointed Advocate Who has pleaded our cause and therefore there is NO CONDEMNATION.

This is a true word of comfort for those that God has purposed to save. As John wrote, “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1) Our comfort is in hearing that it is the Word of the LORD Himself that takes up our defense and answers our guiltiness by His intercession. No matter the greatness of our sin yet He assures each of His own that it is He that pleads their cause.

“Who pleadeth the cause of his people.” Who does this but the LORD Jesus? Could a sinner have a better defense than the One Who is the offended Judge, taking up their cause and pleading in their favor? He is not only called the LORD but thy LORD. Why would any sinner want to look for any other to plead their cause than the LORD Himself. Paul wrote, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31) God was for His people in electing grace having chosen them in Christ before the foundation of the world, Romans 8:33. God the Son is the Advocate of His people in having earned and established that righteousness necessary for God to justify them in His death on the cross, Romans 8:32. The Holy Spirit is for His people in drawing them to the LORD Jesus to see Him as that One Who has already justified them and saved them by His shed blood, Ephesians 1:13-14. God as the Righteous Advocate of His people in Christ has fully undertaken the cause without requiring any contribution by the sinner.

Such is His amazing love for those sinners of His choosing. Such is His grace that He would identify the worst of sinners and intercede on their behalf, even when they knew nothing of Him. Yet, He knew them and therefore undertook in His coming in the flesh to plead their desperate cause. We are not asked to do anything first for Him to be our Advocate. He does so of His own free and sovereign will. How can we not thank Him for His gracious undertaking on our behalf?
