“And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.” vs41-42
God hides things from people. They will not hear, so he hides the truth. They stumble in the dark to perdition. They are overcome by the Evil One, and left to his devices. 2 Corinthians 4:4 - "In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."
Yet, Jesus weeps! This is the mixture of God's character. We are wise to use all the Scripture, and reveal him as he is. He is a God who reprobates and yet yearns.
Let us learn. He hates and loves simultaneously. He reprobates, but wants to save. Oh,sinner, do not take lightly his striving. Don't put him off another day! Tomorrow, you may be reprobate, and unable to see your need. Romans 11:8 - "As it is written, ‘God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.’" You may be hardened forever. Oh sinner, come to him, now. The Master would have rejoiced, if some had come to him. They'd be comfort in his anguish. He’d willingly die for them.
Secondly, there's a reason God reprobates.Luke 19:43-44 — "For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”"
They rejected the light! He came with mercy, but they refused. He didn't hold their false religion against them. He freely forgave anyone who came to him. He touched lepers, and notorious sinners wept at his feet. He forgave the biggest debts. He said, “If any man thirsts, let him come to me and drink.” He offered his blood and body to rebels. John 6:51, 55 - "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." ... For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink." There's no excuse! People simply do not value the right things: Their immortal soul, truth, and God’s glory are meaningless. They prefer the world, and won't give up their pride. They do not fear God, nor respect his word. They are totally unwise!
Mourn like Jesus, and weep as he wept! People reject the light, salvation, and their light turns to darkness. God’s wrath is coming. His indignation is righteous, but it is a horrible grief to lose a soul. It could have been spared!
Thirdly, there are people to blame! These are the money changers! Luke 19:45-46, "And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, saying to them, ‘It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”"
These merchandisers are in it for wealth! They preach for gain. They do not serve the people! 2 Peter 2:3 - "They will exploit you in their greed with made-up stories. Their condemnation, pronounced long ago, is not idle, and their destruction does not sleep."
Anyone who does not preach Christ crucified and show the way to the Father is a money changer. He's a self serving deceiver, blinding the people! They only care about themselves - their crowd, their gain, their position. They do not love anyone, and serve themselves. What’s worst? They do it in the name of God, whom they do not fear! They are blind leaders of the blind!
Woe unto them. Their end is coming. The whip will last forever, and it will have many stripes! In the name of Jesus, they mislead people for profit. They are slimy deceivers and moralists, but they do not preach Christ.
Finally, prepare to meet God. Take this seriously. Christ never pronounced doom for nothing. Jerusalem was destroyed to prefigure the gaping jaws of hell. These people had every privilege, but no faith. They had the Word, but didn't care.
If this is you, then run. Meet Christ while he's weeping, lest wrath come, and he’ll shed no more tears. Then, you will weep, while others rejoice.
