Hebrews 1:10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. 13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
Foundations are very important. No house can stand without a good foundation. No life can last without a right foundation. In our text we read that the Lord laid the foundation in the beginning. That is the way anything good is built. The foundation must be laid and then things can be built properly upon it. God laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of His hands. The evolutionists keep warning us that the earth is in danger of being hit by an asteroid. They imagine that an asteroid hit in the past and are convinced another one could hit as well. Godless people have vivid imaginations. They have no proof, but they dreamt it and so it must be so. There is a Boeing spacecraft docked at the space station right now. They had much trouble getting that spacecraft off the ground in the first place. It finally launched and docked with the space station successfully. Since then they ran into more problems and have had to delay their departure from the space station indefinitely. They have just over 40 days to figure out how to fix the problems in order to get back to earth. The astronauts that are to return may need to be rescued by SpaceX. Boeing has been in the news for the past several months, for all the wrong reasons. They have been exposed for shoddy workmanship. Apparently the big bosses have been too focussed on making money and not enough on quality control. Meanwhile SpaceX which is part of Elon Musk’s business ventures, is growing and having quite good success with its spaceships. Neither one of these companies has the right foundation according to our context, but even in the secular world, if big profit is all you are concerned with ethics goes out the window.
Psalm 102:25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
Adam chose not to build properly on that foundation. However, the foundation was sound and thus Adam’s sin did not ruin the foundation. Abel chose to follow God’s way and he offered a sacrifice that pleased God. He was murdered by his brother Cain, but he built on the right foundation and he is resting today, awaiting the resurrection of his body. Cain’s body will be resurrected as well one day, but he has not been resting until now and he will never get to rest. He chose not to build on the right foundation. Jesus Christ laid the foundation and He came at the right time to lay down His life for the sheep. His blood is what paid the debt owed to God the Father. In verse 11 we read that the earth and the heavens will perish one day. However, the Lord remains.
Psalm 102:12 But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations.
No one can destroy God. The Jews were successful in seeing Jesus nailed to the cross. They rejected the fact that He came to lay down His life. They did not expect Him to rise again. He died and shed His blood. He cried out “it is finished” and He died. He was taken off that cross by godly men and laid in a tomb. His body lay in that tomb for three days and three nights. His Spirit was busy during that time and after the three days and nights, His Spirit united with His body and He rose again. He messed up the Jews’ plans. The chief priest made up a lie and sold it to the soldiers and Pilate. However, Jesus appeared to many after His resurrection and proved that He was alive. He ascended back up to heaven in plain view of the disciples. Meanwhile this earth and the heavens are growing old. They are still able to sustain life and to feed all that are born into this world. However, they have a time stamp on them. One day they will be burned up and God will create new heavens and a new earth. They will be changed but God the Father and Jesus Christ will never change. The Godhead does not get old. Mr. Biden is not fit to tie his own shoes, let alone govern a country. He is past his prime. He has been a corrupt politician all along and now others are continuing his corruption under his name. He will be gone one day and if he does not get saved, he will spend eternity in the lake of fire. There will be no ice cream where he is going. In our text the writer was directed to again remind us of Jesus’ superiority to the angels. God never told any of the angels to sit on His right hand. He did not promise them a kingdom. The Lord Jesus Christ has many enemies, but they will be put down.
Psalm 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
King David wrote those words there, but they obviously are speaking of Jesus Christ. The writer of Hebrews made that clear. The world will be Jesus’ footstool one day. He will rule over the world during the Millennium. No one will get away with rebelling against Him then. Many will not like His rule, but they will not have any choice but to submit outwardly. Their hearts will be evil and at the end of the Millennium, when the devil is loosed for a little season, many people will join him in one final attack against Jesus Christ. However it will be a very short lived attack. Jesus Christ will destroy them and cast the devil into the lake of fire. The lost will all be resurrected and stand at the great white throne judgment. There they will see their works and they will be sentenced to an eternity in the lake of fire. In verse 14 we are reminded that the angels have an important purpose. They are ministering spirits. They are busy ministering to those who are heirs of salvation. We do not see them, but they are busy doing God’s bidding. They are content to serve God in this capacity at this time. It is important to know the Lord and to serve Him faithfully. His angels will not endorse sin. They will be there to encourage the saints in every situation they face as they walk with the Lord faithfully. In the book of Acts we read of an angel being sent to release Peter from prison and to escort him safely out into the street. From there Peter went to Mary’s house, where the saints were praying for his release. They wanted Peter to be spared the wicked plan of king Herod. They had no assurance that their prayer would be answered. When Rhoda saw Peter at the gate, she did not let him in immediately. She told the others and they did not believe her. They thought she was mad but when they went to see, they found Peter at the gate. They were astonished at what the Lord had done. The prayer of faith does not demand things of God. It does not know if God will answer according to our plans, but it knows that God is able to do what is impossible to us. It is important to be sure you are building your life on the right foundation. Have you been saved through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ? Are you walking by faith in Him today? God’s foundation is sure. It will never crumble or get weak. Those who are saved and growing in the Lord will be effective witnesses for Him. They will know His peace and blessing now and into eternity. Pastor Bartel
