Psalm 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
God’s Word is of greater value than gold. Even fine gold is not worth substituting for God’s Word. Yet today most people are chasing after gold, and ignore the Word of God. There was a news item this week of some robbers who entered a jewelry store and overwhelmed the staff. They showed a clip of the robbers smashing different show cases and taking what they wanted. No one could stop them. Who knows if those robbers will be caught. There is more and more of this smash and grab taking place. Just over a year ago there was a massive theft of over 20 million dollars of gold at the Toronto airport. Just this week one of the key figures accused in this theft was going to turn himself in. If he is guilty he has a name, but not a good name. We should desire the truth. We should desire to know the true God. Those who study to show themselves approved unto God will see the value of God’s Word. It will be a priority to them. The casual nature of many professing Christians does not demonstrate the truth of what the Psalmist wrote here. We know that during the time of the apostle Paul, he could find people who were debating ideas. He could join in their meeting and he could engage them in listening to the truth, at least for a time. We know that when the Lord Jesus Christ was on this earth, large crowds would gather around Him to hear Him preach and teach. Not many accepted what He said, but some of those were saved in the early days of church history after His ascension. Today, most of the large churches gain their following with the programs they offer. Most people are spoiled into believing they need programs for the children and for the youth and for the young married couples and for the middle aged and for the seniors. Few see the value of sound preaching and teaching of God’s Word. God tells us that there is great value in His Word and our desire should be for the sound preaching of His Word. God also tells us that His Word is sweeter than honey and the honeycomb. I can still remember the one time my dad took us to some place and we all got a piece of a honeycomb. I can still remember the taste of that comb. It was different than just having honey. I liked it. That taste tickled my taste buds in a way that it still brings back fond memories. God says His Word will be sweeter than that. For me, I can agree with God on that. As much as I appreciated that taste as a boy, I am not going around looking for a honeycomb today. I am seeking to know the LORD better. I do appreciate a good Bible study. I have learned to appreciate the value of God’s Word. By God’s grace that value will continue to increase for me and I will be able to encourage others to take the time to study God’s Word to meet His approval. A person talked of a debate they attended where the topic was anti-semitism. For me, I would not waste my time attending such a debate. The Bible teaches us the importance of loving Israel and of praying for the peace of Jerusalem. The Bible warns those who would curse Israel. I do not need to listen to some fool spouting off why they despise Israel. Truth is not in a competition with lies. Truth is superior to the lies. The apostle Paul did not debate the merits of the false gods he saw at Mars Hill. He noticed the inscription to the unknown god and He turned the attention of the people to hearing Who this “unknown” God was. He was unknown to them, but He certainly is not unknown. The evidence of the true God is all around us. Those who are saved need to exemplify their excitement and their confidence in the true God. He is worthy of our pursuit. He is worth spending quality time, seeking after.
Acts 17:17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. 18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. 19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? 20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. 21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
In verse 11 we are reminded that God’s Word will warn us of danger. This is true whether we appreciate the warning or not. God warned Cain that he was going the wrong way. Cain rejected the warnings and passed his defiant spirit on to his children. Abel was a testimony to the goodness and righteousness of God. He was murdered, but his testimony lives on. Noah spent 120 years building an ark. During that time, we read he was a preacher of righteousness. Every day his labours were a warning that something big was coming. He did not fully understand the magnitude what of was coming, but he built according to God’s plan and God’s timetable. At the right moment, God invited Noah into that ark and He shut the door. Only those inside that ark were safe. Multitudes of people and other creatures perished outside that ark. God sent many prophets in Bible times to warn the people of the fact and danger of sin. John the Baptist warned the people of the judgment that was coming. Jesus warned the people of the heresy of the Pharisees and their gang. The apostles did the same. God’s Word shows us the truth and by doing so, It puts out a loud warning to all. Many do not want to hear the warning, but one day they will wish they had heeded the warnings. God declared that the blessing is in keeping God’s Word. That is where the great reward is. Keeping is putting a hedge around the truth. It is “attending to” It. It is appreciating the value of the Truth and not wanting to entertain the lies. It is another reason why the saved person does not tolerate the perversions. He knows they are there, but he refutes them. He warns people of the importance of the truth. He wants others to know the truth. He, himself, wants to be strengthened in the faith, not weakened. Don’t settle for “second best”. Ask God to guide you to the truth and be sure you know the God of the Truth. Pastor Bartel
