“But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says, ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’”
This is God's response to all our sins, if we turn to him and trust him.
We can be miserable - the worst sinner ever born, and the most hypocritical. We could have worn a mask before our friends, yet privately engaged in devil worship. We can be the most licentious or the most self righteous sinner. We can have openly hated Christ our whole life.
If we, however, turn to him, and say, “Give me this grace. I must have it, though I'm unworthy. It's the only way to deal with my sin. Give me grace to obey you, and forgive me. Cleanse my heart and suppress my sin.” He will do it for our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, alone. He will do it because he delights to save sinners. Micah 7:18, “Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of your possession? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in showing mercy.” He'll do it, because God is love.
Come to him by confession, poor sinner. Acknowledge your wrongs. Jeremiah 3:13, “Only acknowledge your guilt, that you have rebelled against the Lord your God, and scattered your favors among strangers under every green tree, and have not obeyed my voice, says the Lord.” Lay your transgressions before God. No one must hear it but him. Nobody else is as merciful. Only trust him. Take the word - that by faith you are saved. Luke 7:50, “And he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’”
He'll change your life, and make you holy. Sin will fall off. You'll war and win. He'll keep us from falling away, because he began this good work. Philippians 1:6, “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.” It was sovereign electing love that put it in our hearts to come to Jesus. Christ's blood earned the power of the Holy Spirit to help us.
Come to him WITHOUT DELAY. Matthew 4:20, “Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” Do not doubt. Millions have come before you, and he's received us - equally vile, and with no hope in ourselves. He's been merciful to us.
Come, he won't cast you out. John 6:37, “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” Turn to Christ in your sins, and say, “Lord, save me.” He'll reach down his hand and help you. Sin will become bitter, and he'll give you a new way with new joys by the Spirit. You'll have PEACE WITH GOD.
