MEDITATIONS IN THE PSALMS [An outline of the Psalm, A good devotional study when using the scriptures indicated] Psalm 32: 6-7: Lesson 2 âFORGIVENESSâ
Psalm 32:1-2, âThe Benediction of Pardonâ; vs. 3-5, âThe Confessionâ; and now vs. 6-7, âThe Application to others.â Blessed indeed is pardoning mercy; more to be prized than all the world, âWhat shall a man profit if he gains the whole world, and lose his own soulâ (Mark 8:36). What happens when a sinner is blessed with forgiving mercy? The publican received a full, instantaneous, immeasurable pardon of his transgression, which turned his hell into heaven, and made the heir of wrath a partaker of the blessing (Luke 18:9-14). This applies to every person who comes to God through Christ in honest confession of sin. Note how David applies this in vs. 6-7: âFor this cause (forgiveness) let everyone that is godly pray.â Should not everyone âpray for forgiveness?â Sure, but only the godly understand the nature of forgiveness. David as a godly man who had fallen into a grievous sin, and had found repentance and forgiveness for it, here he appeals to the godly who often fall into various sins. He had found a nugget and wanted to share it with the family of the redeemed. âFor this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You in a time when You may be found.â This thought, directed to the godly, must be applied to all, Proverbs 1:20-33; Matthew 25:1-13. My dear unconverted ones, slight not the accepted time; waste not the day of salvation, for He who promises pardon does not promise tomorrow. Again to the godly, âSurely when the great floods of trial overflow they shall not reach the spirit in himâ (Amp.OT). He who is saved from sin and at peace with his God need not fear anything else. Not that we may not be wet by âthe great floods of trial,â even sometimes washed by them, but never drowned. âThey shall not reach the spirit in him;â some take him for the godly manâs soul, âDo not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul;â (Matt.10:28). âThou art my hiding place;â here is the joy of spiritual life; âMyâ hiding place; âMyâ God; âMyâ rock; etc. (Look at Psalm 23:1; 25:1-2; 27:1; 30:2; 31:1-3). Oh the infinite blessedness, to lay our hand upon the Lord with the clasp of a personal âmy.â This is the same man who in v.4 was oppressed by the presence of God. Now he has found Him to be as a shelter. How? FORGIVENESS: the gospel of substitution makes Him to be our refuge; who otherwise will be our judge. âThou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.â âWhat a golden sentence! The man is encircled in a song, surrounded by dancing mercies, all of them proclaiming the triumphs of grace.â What wonders grace does! Look at vs. 3-4 and compare. ~~T. Worthan, 1938-2022
