Job notes for 5-16-24. 2:1-8

From NASB 1995

Job Loses His Health

1Again, there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and [a]Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD. As in 1:6

2The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” As in 1:7. Note that the enemy is always roaming and walking and looking for someone. When he tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he came at him 3 times to cover all three essences of the nature of man, his bodily needs, his needs for importance, his desire for wealth and things. But even when he left, it says it was just for a season. Jesus was tempted all his life, as you will be. Even His best friend Peter would be a source of temptation to Him to the point He would ask the Satan in Peter to get behind Him.

3The LORD said to Satan, “Have you [b]considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man [c]fearing God and turning away from evil. As in 1:8.

“And he still holds firm to his integrity, although you incited Me against him to [d]ruin him without cause.” Without cause from Satan’s viewpoint. And Job would think it without cause. But there was a cause in Heaven, and always is… See also how the Lord appeals to Satan’s nature to fight against God and man. Like he is looking for an argument so He can fulfill His purposes in Job’s life.

4Satan answered the LORD and said, “Skin for skin!

Per an internet hermeneutics site: Skin," …would stand for a person's entire life. Satan, then, is implying that Job will gladly give up his charmed lifestyle ("skin"), if God will save his physical life, even if that life includes pain and suffering, which of course it did!

Some sort of deal was in Satan’s mind. Okay, how much can Job be allowed to keep if I can only take away his health?

Yes, all that a man has, even his health and well-being

he will give for his life. 5However, reach out with Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face!”

6So the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your [e]power, again we recall that anything that happens to us has been permitted. Satan is not in control. We must see also the life of Jesus in this context. He cast out devils that had been permitted by the Father to put diseases on man. How much we are able to cast out today is a matter of controversy but we don’t want to rule it out. Satan may be operating under God’s permitting hand, but He has also given His church to come out from under that Satanic authority. Each case must be handled with care and prayer. It’s hard to cast out a devil when your house has been blown away by a bomb.

only spare his life.”

7Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with severe boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

8And Job took a piece of pottery to scrape himself while he was sitting in the ashes.
