"The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good." - Proverbs 15:3
As Scripture reveals the awesome character and attributes of God, we find Him using them to rightly enforce His law. The simple, yet amazing truth of verse 3 provides such enforcement. The watching eyes of the Lord are in every place. Young and old alike do well to never forget this!
The anthropomorphic language that Solomon uses here highlights and points to God's omniscience. He knows all and see all (Job 24:23, Psalm 139:13-16, Jeremiah 16:17, Hebrews 4:13). This is a glorious, sobering, and comforting truth that is worthy of our serious study.
2 Chronicles 16:9 teaches us, "For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him..." How wonderful it is to see how God watches with a purpose of making His strength and faithfulness to His beloved people known!
Psalm 33:13-15 "The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men. From the place of His dwelling He looks on all the inhabitants of the earth; He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works." Note that God not only sees all, but forms the hearts of all, one by one. Like cogs in a watch, God forms and fashions men's hearts for His divine purpose. Further, He considers their works. Again, nothing is hidden from His sight and knowledge. He knows and weighs their works. God will render to each according to his works (Revelation 2:23).
God searches every heart, and observes everyone's ways.
1 Samuel 16:7 "But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Take comfort in the intercessory work of Christ and the Holy Spirit for you- Romans 8:27 "Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God." As God always hears the Son interceding for us, He always hears the Spirit interceding in us, because His intercession is according to the will of God.
The watching eyes of the Lord also point us to His sovereign providence. He upholds and governs all. God's knowledge is connected with His sovereignty. He created all things, sustains all things, and bring all to pass according to the counsel of His holy will.
Ephesians 1:11 "In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,"
Being mindful of all of this must therefore both inform, restrain, and shape our daily thoughts, words, and actions. Take great comfort that the God who never sleeps is keeping watch over good and evil. But also take great care because the God who never sleeps is keeping watch over good and evil everywhere, Beloved. In every house, in every room, in every closet, in every bathroom, on every street corner, in every car ride, phone call, and conversation, in all of the company you keep, whether you're alone or in a crowd, the eye of God is always on you. May God's all seeing, everywhere present gaze deepen the growth of your relationship with Christ and keep you sober and wise in your walk in godliness before Him.
